Stone and Quartz Care Marble Granite and Engineered Tops.

Stone countertop care in one rule: no acid on calcareous stone. Marble, granite, quartz and butcher block each need different products, and here is why.

Why Acid Is the Dividing Line

Countertop materials look similar and behave completely differently, and pH is the property that separates them.

Marble, travertine, limestone and onyx are calcareous -- they are largely calcium carbonate. Acid reacts with calcium carbonate and dissolves it. That reaction is why a splash of lemon juice, wine, vinegar or a descaling cleaner leaves a dull spot on marble within minutes. The mark is called an etch, and it is physical damage to the stone rather than a stain sitting on top of it.

Granite is siliceous, made largely of quartz and feldspar, and it is far more acid-tolerant. The vulnerable part of a granite installation is not the stone but the impregnating sealer, which acid and harsh cleaners degrade over time.

Engineered quartz is a third thing entirely: ground natural quartz bound in a polymer resin. The mineral part is tough, but the resin is not, and it is the resin that fails under bleach, abrasives and heat.

What Is the Safe Everyday Cleaner for Stone?

Warm water with a few drops of dish soap, or a cleaner explicitly labeled pH-neutral and stone-safe. Wipe, then dry with a soft cloth so no residue or water spotting is left. Avoid vinegar, lemon, general-purpose bathroom cleaners, descalers, bleach and abrasive powders on any natural stone surface.

Etch Versus Stain: They Need Opposite Answers

This distinction saves people from making damage worse.

A stain is something absorbed into the stone -- oil, wine, coffee -- and it usually looks darker than the surrounding surface. Stains are drawn back out with a poultice, a paste left in place for hours so it wicks the substance up and out.

An etch is a dull or lighter mark where acid has eaten the polished surface. Nothing you apply will remove it, because there is nothing sitting there to remove. Light etching on polished marble can sometimes be improved with a polishing compound made for the stone; deeper etching needs a stone restoration professional.

Applying a stain remover to an etch does nothing. Applying more acid to a stain makes an etch as well.

Sealing: What It Does and Does Not Do

Natural stone is porous, and an impregnating sealer fills that pore structure so liquids sit on the surface long enough to be wiped up. It buys time. It does not make stone stainproof, and it does not protect against acid at all, because etching is a chemical reaction with the stone itself.

The water test is the standard check: put a few drops of water on the surface, wait several minutes, and see whether the stone darkens. Darkening means the sealer has worn and the stone is absorbing.

Frequency varies enormously by stone type, finish and use. A honed, light-colored marble in a busy kitchen needs sealing far more often than a dense polished granite in a guest bathroom.

Quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing.

Quartz, Butcher Block and Other Counters

Engineered quartz asks for less maintenance and has stricter limits. No bleach, no abrasive pads or powders, no strong solvents, and never a hot pan set directly on the surface, because thermal shock can crack it and heat degrades the resin binder. Trivets are not optional on quartz.

Butcher block and wood counters are the opposite problem: water is the enemy rather than acid. They need wiping rather than pooling, regular oiling with a food-safe finish, and immediate attention to standing water around a sink cutout.

Solid surface material is repairable and forgiving but scratches, and it dislikes strong solvents.

The etching cases that surprise people are rarely dramatic spills. They are routine products used without thinking.

Bathroom cleaners and lime-and-scale removers are acidic, and a marble vanity top takes the damage. Descaling a faucet without protecting the surface below it does the same. Toilet bowl cleaner splashing onto a stone floor leaves a permanent mark. Some cooking oils and citrus-based degreasers reach stone counters through a chopping board.

Can you use vinegar on granite countertops?

It is not recommended. Granite itself is more acid-tolerant than marble, but vinegar degrades the impregnating sealer over repeated use, which leaves the stone more absorbent and more prone to staining. A pH-neutral cleaner or mild dish soap in warm water is the safer routine.
