TL;DR

Why Stainless Steel Is Not Actually Stainless
Stainless steel resists corrosion because chromium in the alloy reacts with oxygen to form an invisible passive layer on the surface. That layer is self-repairing, which is why a scratch in stainless does not rust the way a scratch in plain steel does.
Chlorides break that layer down. Chlorine bleach, salt left sitting on a wet surface, and some chloride-containing cleaners all attack it, and once the passive layer is compromised locally the result is pitting -- small permanent craters that then hold soil and look worse over time.
That single mechanism explains most stainless problems people encounter, and it is why bleach is never the right product on a stainless sink, appliance or pan.

What Is the Correct Way to Clean Brushed Stainless?
Wipe with the grain -- the direction of the fine lines in the finish -- using a soft cloth and either mild soapy water or a stainless-specific cleaner. Dry completely, again with the grain, since water spots are minerals left behind by evaporation. Never use chlorine bleach, steel wool or abrasive powders.
Finding the grain takes a second: look at the surface in raking light and the fine parallel lines become obvious. On appliances the grain usually runs horizontally, but not always.
Streaks, Fingerprints and What Causes Them
Streaking on stainless is almost always product residue rather than dirt.
Oil-based stainless polishes leave a film that looks excellent for a day and then shows every fingerprint, because the film itself is what fingers mark. Over-application makes it worse, not better. The alternative is a small amount of product on the cloth rather than sprayed on the surface, buffed until nothing remains.
Hard water spotting is the other cause, and it is mineral. Drying immediately after cleaning prevents it, and existing spots need a mild acidic descaler used briefly and rinsed off, not left in contact.
Rust-colored specks on a stainless sink are usually not the sink rusting. They are typically iron particles from other items -- a cast iron pan, a steel wool pad, tap water -- deposited on the surface, and they wipe off with a suitable cleaner.
Copper, Brass and Bronze: Tarnish Versus Patina
These metals oxidize, and the first question is whether you want them to.
Tarnish is surface oxidation and it is removable. Patina is a stable, often deliberate aged surface, and stripping it is a permanent aesthetic decision. Antique pieces in particular can lose value when polished.
The bigger practical question is whether the item is lacquered. Many decorative copper and brass pieces carry a clear coat to prevent tarnish. Polish removes that lacquer in patches, and the result is blotchy: shiny where the coating went and tarnished where it remains. Lacquered items are dusted and wiped, never polished.
Unlacquered copper and brass can be polished with an appropriate product or a mild acid-and-salt method, then rinsed and dried thoroughly, because leftover acid keeps working.
Silver is a different chemistry again -- it tarnishes from sulfur compounds in the air, and storage in tarnish-resistant cloth slows it far more effectively than frequent polishing does.
Chrome, Nickel and Aluminum
Chrome is a thin plated layer over another metal, so the goal is never to wear through it. Mild soap, a soft cloth, and prompt drying handles nearly everything. Abrasives leave a permanent haze, and acidic descalers left in contact can damage the plating and the fixture underneath.
Brushed and satin nickel finishes are more delicate than they look, and many are coated. Manufacturers of plumbing fittings typically specify mild soap and water only, and warranties often exclude damage from abrasive or acidic cleaners.
Aluminum darkens in alkaline conditions, which is why an aluminum pot comes out of a dishwasher grayer than it went in, and anodized aluminum has a hardened surface that abrasives strip permanently.
