The four families and what they do

Alkaline cleaners have a high pH. They saponify fats and lift grease, which makes them the right choice for kitchens, ovens, range hoods, and greasy floors. Strong alkalinity damages aluminum, dulls some finishes, and is harsh on skin. Acidic cleaners have a low pH. They dissolve mineral deposits, hard water scale, soap scum, and rust. Descalers, toilet bowl cleaners, and vinegar sit here. Acids permanently etch marble, travertine, and limestone, degrade granite sealer, and attack some metals.

Solvents dissolve what water cannot: oils, waxes, adhesives, inks, and some plastics. Alcohols, citrus terpenes, and glycol ethers are common examples. They damage many plastics and finishes and require ventilation.

Enzyme cleaners contain biological catalysts that break protein, starch, and fat into smaller molecules. They handle pet accidents, blood, food, and organic odor. They need time to work and are deactivated by high heat and by strong disinfectants.

Two additional categories sit alongside these. Surfactants are in nearly everything and do the actual lifting and suspending of soil. Disinfectants are a regulatory category rather than a chemistry family, and they are for killing organisms rather than removing soil.

How pH tells you what a product will damage

pH is the most useful number on a label, because it predicts both performance and risk. High pH means grease removal and a risk to aluminum, soft metals, and some coatings. Low pH means scale removal and a risk to natural stone, grout, and some metals. Neutral means safe on the widest range of surfaces and weaker on both grease and scale.

The practical version: pH-neutral for natural stone, sealed hardwood, and anything you are unsure about. Alkaline for grease. Acidic for scale, and never on stone.

What is the difference between a cleaner and a disinfectant?

A cleaner removes soil using detergent, water, and agitation. A disinfectant kills a defined list of organisms to a standard stated on its label, and it only works on a surface that was cleaned first, because organic soil physically shields microbes and consumes the active ingredient.

Some products claim both, which usually means two steps with the same bottle rather than one. Clean first, then apply and let it stay wet for the stated contact time. Wiping immediately means the disinfection never happened.

The short list that covers a household

Most homes need five products, not twenty.

Dilution is where the money is

Concentrates cost less per use than ready-to-use bottles, which are largely water in single-use packaging. They also let you mix the strength each job needs rather than paying for one fixed strength.

The catch is that dilution has to be measured. Overdosing does not clean better; it leaves residue that attracts soil, which makes surfaces look dirty faster and invites even more product. Under-dosing simply fails. A marked measuring cup and a labeled spray bottle solve both problems.

Label every bottle you fill, including the product and the dilution. An unlabeled bottle is a hazard for anyone else in the house and a guessing game for you later.

The safety floor

Cleaning products are the most common source of household chemical injury, and the rules are short.

Never combine chlorine bleach with ammonia, which produces chloramine gas; ammonia is in many glass cleaners and in urine. Never combine bleach with vinegar, lemon juice, or any acidic cleaner including toilet bowl cleaners and descalers, which releases chlorine gas. Never combine bleach with rubbing alcohol. Never mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in one container. Never layer two drain products.

Ventilate while working, wear gloves for extended contact, store products in original labeled containers, and keep them out of reach of children and pets. If a product is not working, rinse the surface thoroughly and let it dry before trying something different.
