How pH Predicts Which Surfaces a Cleaner Will Damage.

Alkaline lifts grease, acid dissolves scale, neutral is the safe default. Acids permanently etch marble and limestone, and strong alkalis attack aluminum.

How does pH predict which surfaces a cleaner damages?

Because the same chemistry that dissolves a soil also dissolves anything on the surface made of similar material. An acid that removes limescale will attack a stone made of the same mineral. An alkali that breaks down grease will attack certain metals and soften some finishes. Matching pH to the soil and to the surface is the whole skill.

The scale in plain terms

pH runs from 0 to 14, with 7 as neutral. Below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline.

The scale is logarithmic, so each whole step is a tenfold change. A product at pH 3 is ten times more acidic than one at pH 4 and a hundred times more acidic than one at pH 5. That is why two products that both read as acidic on a label can behave completely differently.

For rough orientation: distilled water sits at 7, vinegar in the 2 to 3 range, dish soap near neutral, baking soda solution around 8 to 9, and heavy-duty degreasers and oven cleaners well up into the 12 to 14 band. Chlorine bleach solutions are also strongly alkaline.

What alkaline does, and what it ruins

Alkaline cleaners break down fats, oils and protein soil. They convert grease into something water-soluble, which is why degreasers, oven products and most laundry detergents sit on the alkaline side.

The damage list is specific. Strong alkalis attack aluminum, darkening and pitting it, which is why oven cleaner ruins aluminum pans, trays, screens and window frames. They damage anodized finishes for the same reason. They dull and eventually break down polyurethane and other wood floor finishes, they can strip wax, and they soften some paints, particularly flat and older finishes.

They also affect people. Strongly alkaline products cause deeper burns on skin and eyes than most acids at equivalent strength, and they do it with less immediate stinging to warn you. Gloves and eye protection are not optional at that end of the scale, and ventilation matters because many of these products carry additional irritant ingredients.

What acid does, and what it ruins

Acidic cleaners dissolve mineral deposits: limescale in a kettle or on a showerhead, hard water spots on glass, rust, toilet bowl rings, and soap scum, which is largely a mineral compound rather than leftover soap.

The damage list here is the one that costs the most money. Acids etch marble, travertine, limestone and onyx permanently, because those stones are calcium carbonate and an acid dissolves them on contact. A dull patch appears within seconds and it is a physical loss of surface, not a stain, so no amount of cleaning restores it. Professional refinishing is the only remedy.

Acids also degrade the sealer on granite, damage cement-based grout, corrode metal fittings and fixtures, and can dull polished chrome over time. On unglazed tile and concrete they can leave permanent lightening.

Believing that a mild household acid is safe on any surface because it came out of a kitchen cupboard is one of the more costly cleaning myths that waste time and money.

Neutral is the default for a reason

A pH-neutral cleaner is the correct choice on natural stone of any kind, on sealed hardwood and laminate, on luxury vinyl plank, on most finished furniture, and generally anywhere you are unsure.

It is not weaker in any meaningful sense for everyday soil. Ordinary household grime is mostly light oil, dust and skin residue, and a neutral detergent with a cloth and some agitation removes it perfectly well. Reaching for an extreme pH is what you do when a specific soil demands it, not what you do by default.

pH is not the whole label

Two products at the same pH can behave very differently, because pH is only one part of a formula.

Solvents change what a product dissolves independently of its pH. Chelating agents help a cleaner cope with hard water. Abrasives scratch regardless of chemistry. Bleaching agents lighten dyes whether the product is acidic or alkaline. Two safety points close this out. Never combine an acidic product with a chlorine bleach product, because that reaction releases chlorine gas. And test any unfamiliar product on a hidden area first, then let it dry fully before judging the result, since etching and dulling often only show up once the surface is dry. Can I mix an acid and an alkaline cleaner to get something balanced?

No. They neutralize into salty water with little cleaning power, and if one of them is a chlorine bleach product the reaction releases chlorine gas, which is dangerous to breathe. Use one product, rinse the surface, then use the other if it is genuinely needed.
