The One Question That Prevents Most Damage
Before you scrub anything, ask what the surface actually is. Not what the pan looks like, but what it is made of and whether it carries a coating.
That question separates five material families, and each one has a failure mode that people trigger by accident every week. A stainless pot can take steel wool; the identical-looking anodized aluminum pot cannot. A ceramic-coated pan tolerates soap but not a scouring pad. The pan does not announce which it is, so the manufacturer's own labeling is worth keeping.

What Is the Correct Way to Wash Cast Iron?
Wash cast iron with hot water and a stiff brush, using a small amount of mild soap if needed, then dry it immediately over low heat and wipe on a thin film of cooking oil. Never soak it, never air dry it, and never leave it wet in a sink overnight.
Modern dish soap does not strip a properly polymerized seasoning layer the way old lye-based soaps did. Water sitting on bare iron is the real enemy, and rust can appear within hours.
Carbon steel follows exactly the same rules. Enameled cast iron is different again, since the enamel is a glass coating that chips under impact and stains from high-heat cooking.
Nonstick, Ceramic and Coated Pans
Coatings fail from three things: abrasion, dry heat, and metal utensils. Handle those and a coated pan lasts years longer.
- Wash by hand with a soft sponge, since dishwasher detergent is aggressive enough to dull coatings over repeated cycles.
- Never preheat an empty coated pan on high, because overheating degrades the coating and produces fumes.
- Retire any pan whose coating is visibly flaking or blistered rather than trying to clean it back.
That last point is worth taking seriously in a home with pet birds. Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems and are vulnerable to fumes from overheated cookware and many household products, which is why the general advice is to keep birds well away from the kitchen while cooking.

Stainless, Aluminum and Copper
Stainless steel is forgiving but shows everything. Rainbow heat tint is a harmless oxide layer, and white chalky spots are usually mineral deposits from hard water rather than damage. Both respond to a mild acid, not to more scrubbing. Chloride bleach is the thing to avoid, since it pits stainless permanently.
Aluminum darkens in alkaline conditions, which is why an aluminum pot often comes out of the dishwasher grayer than it went in. Anodized aluminum has a hardened surface that abrasives and strong detergents strip.

Glassware: Film Versus Etching
Cloudy glasses have two possible causes and only one of them is fixable. A film is a deposit sitting on the surface, usually minerals from hard water or undissolved detergent, and a mild acid soak clears it. Etching is microscopic erosion of the glass itself, caused over time by soft water combined with too much detergent and high heat, and it is permanent.
The test is simple. Soak a cloudy glass in a mild acid for a few minutes. If it clears, it was film. If nothing changes, it is etched.
Delicate glass has its own rules. Lead crystal is softer than ordinary glass and scratches easily, gold-rimmed pieces lose their rim in a dishwasher, and thin stemware breaks from thermal shock when hot water hits a cold glass.

How Do You Handle a Badly Burnt Pan?
Cover the burnt layer with hot water, add a small amount of dish soap, and let it sit for at least an hour so the bond softens. Then use a wooden or plastic scraper. Repeat the soak rather than escalating to a metal scourer, which scratches every material except bare cast iron and heavy stainless.
Boiling water in the pan on low heat speeds this up on stainless. Do not do it on nonstick, and do not do it on enamel, where thermal stress causes crazing.

Does soap ruin cast iron seasoning?
No. A well-established seasoning layer is polymerized oil bonded to the metal, and ordinary dish soap does not dissolve it. The genuine risks are soaking the pan, leaving it wet, running it through a dishwasher, or scrubbing back to bare metal with harsh abrasives.
Why do my glasses come out of the dishwasher cloudy?
