TL;DR
Kombucha is fermented tea, which makes it a tannin stain, and tannins set when you hit them with an alkaline cleaner. Blot, flush with cool water, then treat with a mild acid spotter or a dilute vinegar solution before any detergent. The sour smell is separate and usually clears once the sugar residue is properly rinsed out and the carpet dries fast.
Why Kombucha Is a Tannin Stain
Kombucha starts as brewed tea, and tea is the classic tannin. Tannins are plant compounds that bond readily to fiber, which is why tea has been used as a fabric dye for centuries. Fermentation adds acids, a little residual sugar, and sometimes fruit juice with its own colorant.
That tea base is why an ordinary carpet cleaner often makes the mark worse. Most general spotters are alkaline, and tannins darken and bond harder on the alkaline side of the pH scale. The correct side for tannin is acid.
If you have dealt with how to get tea stains out of carpet, the approach here is the same one with an extra sugar rinse at the end.
What Should You Do in the First Few Minutes?
Blot the free liquid with a dry white towel, pressing straight down and lifting straight up rather than wiping. Change to a clean section each time so you are lifting rather than redistributing.
Then flush with cool water. Dampen a towel, press, lift, and repeat five or six times. Plain water dilution removes a large share of a fresh tannin spill and it cannot make anything worse.
Use cool water, not hot. Heat drives tannin deeper into the yarn and can set any fruit colorant that is in the bottle. Work from the outer edge of the spill toward the center so you are not carrying color into clean fiber.
The Acid Spotter Step
Mix roughly one part white vinegar to four parts cool water, or use a commercial tannin spotter, which is deliberately formulated on the acid side. Apply it to a white towel rather than pouring it onto the carpet.
Press for about a minute, lift, and check the towel for brown transfer. Rotate to clean cloth and repeat until nothing more comes up. Then rinse with plain cool water and blot dry.
That is the same principle behind how to do an acid rinse on carpet, which is why professionals finish tannin work on the acid side rather than the alkaline one.
Never combine vinegar with hydrogen peroxide or with any chlorine bleach product, either in a container or on the same wet spot.
What About the Sugar and the Fizz?
Kombucha carries residual sugar even in the low-sugar versions, and flavored bottles carry more. Sugar left in the pile stays tacky and pulls in soil from every footstep, so a spot that looked clean turns dark over a few weeks.
Once the tannin step is done, if the spot still feels sticky, use a small amount of neutral pH detergent on a damp towel and then rinse thoroughly with clean water until no suds transfer. It is worth taking the time to rinse the detergent out, because detergent residue is itself a soil magnet.
The carbonation does nothing either way. It disperses the liquid slightly faster, which mostly means the spill spreads a little wider than a still drink would.
Does the Sour Smell Stay in the Carpet?
Usually not, if the spill is rinsed properly and dried quickly. The sour smell comes from acetic acid and other fermentation byproducts, and most of it leaves with the liquid. What lingers comes from residue that was left behind in a damp pile.
Rinse thoroughly, then dry the area fast. Weight a folded dry towel over the spot for several hours to draw moisture up from the backing, then put a fan across the floor. How to speed up carpet drying covers airflow placement.
A live culture in unpasteurized kombucha is not a hazard to your carpet, but organic residue plus lasting dampness is what grows a musty smell. Fast drying prevents that. Source: IICRC S100 carpet cleaning standard
What Not to Use
Do not use a general alkaline carpet spotter as the first step. It sets tannin, and once a tannin stain has darkened under alkalinity it is much harder to reverse.
Do not use chlorine bleach. It strips carpet dye and leaves a permanent pale spot, and it must never be combined with an acid, an ammonia product, or alcohol.
Do not use hydrogen peroxide or oxygen bleach on wool. Wool cannot take oxygen bleach, high heat, or high alkalinity, and vinegar solutions should be kept dilute on wool as well. See how to clean wool carpet for the limits.
Do not scrub. Friction opens the yarn twist and pushes tannin into the fiber core, and it permanently dulls cut-pile carpet.
If a Whole Bottle Went Down
A full bottle soaks through the carpet into the pad, and at that point surface blotting cannot reach the liquid. Extract as much as you can with a wet vacuum or a shop vacuum on the wet setting, then treat the surface as above and put strong airflow on the area for a day or two.
If the smell keeps returning after the carpet is dry, the pad is holding residue and needs attention. That is a professional call rather than a repeat of the same home steps.
FAQ
Does kombucha stain carpet permanently?
Rarely, if it is treated on the acid side within a day. The tea tannin releases well with a dilute vinegar solution and cool water. Flavored versions with strong fruit colorant can leave a faint tint on nylon, which then needs professional treatment.
Why did my carpet cleaner make the kombucha stain darker?
Most general carpet cleaners are alkaline, and tannin stains darken and bond harder on the alkaline side of the pH scale. The correct treatment is acidic, which is why a dilute vinegar solution or a dedicated tannin spotter works where a general product does not.
Can I just use vinegar since kombucha is already acidic?
Yes, dilute vinegar is the right family of treatment even though the drink itself is acidic. The acidity of the spill does not remove the tannin, and the tannin still needs an acid environment plus mechanical blotting to release from the fiber.
Will the sour smell go away on its own?
It usually goes with a proper rinse and fast drying. A smell that persists after the carpet is dry means residue is still in the pile or the pad. More clean water blotting and stronger airflow address the first case, and the second needs professional help.
Is unpasteurized kombucha a problem for carpet?
The live culture will not damage carpet fiber. The issue is organic residue in a damp pile, which can develop a musty smell if the carpet stays wet. Rinse well and dry quickly and it behaves like any other tea spill.
How do I treat kombucha on a wool rug?
Blot, flush with cool water, and use a very dilute vinegar solution rather than a commercial spotter. Wool cannot take oxygen bleach, high heat, or high alkalinity, and it holds moisture longer, so dry it thoroughly with airflow and get help if a mark remains.

Kombucha is a straightforward stain that goes badly wrong only when someone reaches for a general alkaline cleaner first. Cool water, the acid side, a thorough rinse, and fast drying handle almost every spill on synthetic carpet. If a bottle emptied into the pad or a fruit tint has survived, that is the point to have it looked at. Get a quote and we will walk you through it.
