What makes wool different from synthetic carpet
Wool is a protein fiber, chemically closer to your own hair than to nylon or polyester. It is held together by scales that lock when heat, moisture, and agitation arrive together, and it is colored with acid dyes that release in alkaline conditions.
That is the whole story in one sentence: everything a synthetic carpet shrugs off -- high heat, strong alkalinity, hard agitation, bleach -- is exactly what wool cannot take. If you are not certain what you have, start with identify your carpet fiber before anything wet touches it.
What pH is safe for wool carpet?
Roughly 5 to 8, meaning mildly acidic through barely alkaline. Below about 4 the fiber is stressed by acid; above about 9 the acid dyes let go and the wool yellows and weakens. Most general-purpose carpet cleaners sit above 9, which is why "safe for all carpets" on a label is not proof of anything.
The safest wool products say wool-safe on the label and list a pH in the single digits. When in doubt, warm water with a small amount of a neutral wool-rated detergent does more good than a strong cleaner used once.

Dry soil removal comes first
Most of what makes a wool carpet look tired is dry, gritty soil sitting at the base of the pile. Wool hides soil unusually well because of its crimp, so the carpet can hold a lot before it looks dirty at all.
Vacuum slowly, in overlapping passes, in two directions. On a cut-pile wool, a brush roll is fine at the correct height. On a wool loop or a wool berber, run suction only -- a spinning brush fuzzes loops and pulls them.
The safe home cleaning method, step by step
- Vacuum thoroughly. Two directions, slow passes, no shortcuts.
- Test for colorfastness. Dampen a white cotton cloth with your solution, press it into an out-of-the-way spot for about 30 seconds, and look at the cloth. Any color on the cloth means stop.
- Mix light. A neutral wool-safe detergent at the weakest dilution on the label, in warm -- not hot -- water.
- Work in small sections. Apply with a damp cloth or a low-moisture machine. Do not flood the pile. Water that reaches the backing causes most wool problems.
- Rinse. A clean damp cloth or a rinse pass with plain water, ideally slightly acidic. Leftover detergent attracts soil faster than the soil you just removed.
- Blot and dry fast. Towels first, then fans, then a dehumidifier or open windows if the weather allows.
Why fast drying matters more on wool
Wool absorbs a large share of its own weight in water, so it stays wet long after a nylon carpet would be dry. Slow drying on wool causes three specific problems: cellulosic browning, where a jute or cotton backing pushes tannins up into the pile as a tan halo; dye migration between colors; and a musty smell that does not leave when the carpet finally dries.
Set up airflow before you start, not after. In a damp Willamette Valley winter, plan on a dehumidifier running alongside the fans, because moving humid air only relocates it.
What must never touch wool carpet
- Chlorine bleach. It dissolves protein fiber. This is structural damage, not a color problem.
- Oxygen bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Both yellow wool and weaken it, even heavily diluted.
- High-alkaline degreasers and traffic-lane presprays. The standard synthetic workhorses.
- Enzyme spotters left to dwell. Protein-digesting enzymes cannot tell a protein stain from a protein fiber.
- Very hot water and true steam. Heat plus moisture plus agitation is the felting recipe.
- Aggressive rotary scrubbing. It fuzzes the surface and mats the pile.

Spot cleaning wool without spreading the problem
Blot, never rub. Rubbing distorts the pile and drives the spill toward the backing, where it will wick back up as the carpet dries. Work from the outside of the spot inward, and use cool water for anything protein-based -- milk, blood, egg, pet accidents -- because warm water sets protein.
