Is hot water extraction safe for wool?
Yes, with adjustments. Extraction is a well-established method for wool wall-to-wall carpet, and the wool industry's own care guidance accepts it. What has to change is the temperature, the chemistry, and the drying plan -- all three, not one of them.
The risk is not the water. It is heat plus alkalinity plus agitation, which together felt and yellow wool. Remove those and extraction is a good way to get soil out of a wool carpet.
What hot water extraction actually is
The method commonly marketed as "steam cleaning" is not steam. It is hot water pushed into the pile under pressure along with a rinse solution, followed immediately by vacuum recovery. True steam -- actual vapor at high heat -- is a different thing and should not be used on wool at all, because that combination of heat and moisture is exactly what felts the fiber.

The three settings that matter
Temperature. Keep it moderate rather than maximum. Wool tolerates warm water; it does not tolerate the highest temperatures a truck-mount can deliver. Heat is the first leg of the felting triangle, and it also accelerates dye bleed.
pH. Between roughly 5 and 8, meaning mildly acidic to barely alkaline. Wool is a protein fiber held together by acid dyes, and alkalinity loosens those dyes, yellows the fiber, and weakens it. Above about pH 9 you are causing damage.
Drying speed. Wool holds a lot of water -- it can absorb a significant fraction of its own weight -- and slow drying invites cellulosic browning from a jute or cotton backing, dye migration, and odor. Air movers are not an upsell on wool; they are part of the method.
A fourth item belongs alongside these: the job should end with an acid rinse. That neutralizes any alkalinity, restores the fiber's natural pH, and helps set the dyes back down.
What must never be used
- Chlorine bleach. It dissolves protein fiber. Not a color problem -- a structural one.
- Oxygen bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Both yellow wool and weaken it, even dilute.
- High-alkaline presprays and degreasers. The standard synthetic-carpet workhorses.
- Aggressive rotary agitation. The third leg of felting, and it fuzzes the surface.
- Enzyme spotters with long dwell. Protein-digesting enzymes do not distinguish a protein stain from a protein fiber.
- Very hot water. Especially combined with any of the above.

Wool wall-to-wall versus wool area rugs
These need different treatment even though the fiber is the same.
Wall-to-wall wool is usually mill-dyed with well-set dyes and installed over a pad on a subfloor. Moderated in-home extraction works well, with heavy attention to drying because the carpet can only dry from the top.
Area rugs, especially hand-knotted ones, are a different problem. Dyes may be less stable, foundations are often cotton and can shrink, and fringe is structural rather than decorative. Many rug specialists prefer off-site immersion washing, where the rug can be flushed thoroughly and dried from both sides in a controlled environment.
The practical rule: an in-home extraction is reasonable for machine-made wool carpet and modest wool rugs. Anything hand-knotted, antique, silk-blend, or of unknown origin should go to a rug specialist.
Testing and prep
Before any water touches a wool carpet, test for colorfastness. Wet a white cotton cloth with the cleaning solution, press it into the pile for about 30 seconds, and check the cloth. Any color transfer means the chemistry or the method has to change.
Test each color separately, and pay particular attention to reds and deep blues. Prep matters too: dry soil removal with a good vacuum before wet cleaning removes far more than the wet pass will, and wool hides soil so well that the amount recovered often surprises people. What about low-moisture methods on wool?
Encapsulation and dry compound methods are legitimate options for wool and are often preferred for interim maintenance. They use far less water, dry in an hour or two, and eliminate the drying risk almost entirely.
The tradeoff is depth. Extraction removes more soil from the base of the pile, which is why wool care guidance still calls for periodic deep cleaning rather than interim maintenance alone. A reasonable program alternates: low-moisture between deep cleanings, extraction with wool-safe settings for the periodic deep clean.
