How to Do It, Step by Step
1. Clean first. Run your normal cleaning process with your preconditioner or detergent. The acid rinse is the last step, not a replacement for cleaning.
2. Empty and flush the solution tank. Get every trace of the alkaline product out of the tank, the hose, and any separate detergent reservoir. If the machine keeps metering detergent while you rinse, you have not rinsed.
3. Mix the rinse agent. Fill with warm water and add a commercial acid rinse or carpet rinse agent at the label dilution. These are concentrates, usually measured in ounces per gallon, and the label ratio is not a suggestion. Too little does nothing, too much leaves an acidic residue that causes its own problems.
4. One wet pass. Trigger down, moving slowly at roughly one foot every two to three seconds, in overlapping lanes.
5. Two or three dry passes. Trigger off, same lane, same slow speed. This is where the solution and the neutralized residue come out.
6. Verify. Press a pH test strip into the damp pile, or press a white towel into the carpet and test the moisture on the towel. You are aiming for the 5 to 8 range.
7. Dry it. Get air moving across the pile at a low angle and keep traffic off until the base of the yarn is dry.

Can You Use Vinegar Instead?
On synthetic carpet, yes, as a reasonable home substitute. Roughly one cup of white vinegar per gallon of warm water gets you into a usefully acidic range without going too far. Follow it with a plain water pass and thorough dry passes.
Three cautions. First, undiluted vinegar is far too aggressive to put on carpet, so measure rather than pouring. Second, the smell lingers for a day and then fades, which surprises people who did not expect it. Third, and most importantly, never mix vinegar with hydrogen peroxide or with any bleach product. Vinegar and peroxide together produce a corrosive acid, and any acid combined with bleach releases toxic gas.
On wool, use a purpose-made wool-safe acid rinse rather than improvising with vinegar. Wool is worth the specific product, and a formulated rinse also conditions the fiber rather than only adjusting pH.

Do not go too acidic. Below about pH 4 you are creating a new problem rather than fixing one. Some fibers and some dyes are sensitive to strong acid, and an acidic residue attracts soil just as an alkaline one does. The target is mildly acidic to neutral, not sour.
Do not skip the dry passes. An acid rinse you leave in the carpet is still residue. The dry passes are the point.
Do not treat it as a cleaning step. Rinse agents are formulated to neutralize and flush, not to break down soil. Using an acid rinse instead of a proper cleaning stage gives you a neutral, still-dirty carpet.
Do not use it as a stain treatment. Some acidic products do have spotting uses, but a general rinse agent at rinse dilution will not lift a stain.
Mind the wool rules generally. Beyond pH, wool cannot take high heat or oxygen bleach. An acid rinse addresses one of those three risks, not all of them.
Watch for dye instability. On older or hand-made rugs with unstable dyes, test in a hidden area first regardless of what product you are using.
