What PSI Do You Need for Pressure Washing Each Surface.

TL;DR

Concrete tolerates roughly 2,500 to 3,500 PSI, wood and painted surfaces top out closer to 500 to 800 PSI, and siding, stucco, and roofing should be washed with detergent at low pressure rather than blasted at all. PSI is only half the story -- flow rate, nozzle angle, and how close you hold the wand change the force at the surface far more than the number on the machine does.

PSI and GPM are two different things

PSI is pressure. GPM is gallons per minute, the volume of water moving through the wand. Pressure breaks the bond between the soil and the surface. Volume carries the loosened soil away.

A machine rated at 3,000 PSI and 1.2 GPM and a machine rated at 2,200 PSI and 2.5 GPM feel completely different in the hand. The second one cleans large flat areas faster even though the pressure number is lower, because it is moving more than twice the water.

Equipment suppliers often multiply the two figures into a rough score sometimes called cleaning units. It is a crude measure, but it explains why a low-flow machine with an impressive PSI rating still takes all afternoon to do a driveway.

The number on the box is not the number at the surface

Rated PSI is measured at the nozzle. What reaches the material depends on three things you control: the nozzle angle, the distance, and the angle of attack.

A narrow spray concentrates the same water into a smaller area, so the force per square inch climbs sharply. A wide fan spreads it out and drops the force. That is the entire logic behind nozzle tips by color.

Distance does the rest. Pressure falls off quickly as the stream opens up and slows, which is why holding the wand a foot away instead of two inches away is the single easiest way to make a machine gentler without changing any settings.

The practical version: you can make a 3,000 PSI machine safe on soft material by choosing a wide tip and backing up. You cannot make a narrow tip held close safe on anything.

Treat these as ceilings, not targets. Start below the top of the range, test in a hidden spot, and work up only if you need to.

Two entries on that list are not really pressure jobs at all. Siding and roofing are chemistry jobs where the water only rinses, which is the whole argument for soft washing compared to pressure washing.

How much PSI to clean concrete

Concrete is the one common residential surface that genuinely wants pressure. Sound, cured, unsealed concrete handles 2,500 to 3,500 PSI without complaint, and light soil often comes off well below that.

Flow matters more than pressure here. A machine at 2.5 GPM or better will finish a driveway in a fraction of the time a 1.4 GPM unit needs, because the job is mostly about moving water across a lot of square feet.

The bigger risk on concrete is not damage but appearance. A wand held at varying distance leaves visible arcs and stripes that are very hard to blend once dry, which is why a rotating surface cleaner attachment is the standard tool for flat work.

Older, spalling, or poorly finished concrete is a different case. If the surface is already flaking, back the pressure down and accept a less dramatic result rather than accelerating the damage.

Where more pressure makes the job worse

Soft and porous materials do not resist pressure, they absorb it and fail.

Wood is the clearest example. The soft spring growth between the harder grain lines erodes first, leaving a raised, fuzzy surface that no amount of later cleaning fixes. That is the case laid out in why high pressure ruins a wood deck.

Siding fails differently. Lap joints are designed to shed water downward, so a stream aimed upward or into a seam drives water behind the panel, where it soaks sheathing and grows mildew you cannot see or reach.

Safety notes that matter more than PSI

Never operate a pressure washer from a ladder. The wand pushes back hard, and the recoil on an unstable platform is a genuine fall risk. Use an extension wand from the ground, or hire the height work out.

Keep the stream off people, pets, wiring, meters, and light fixtures. A narrow tip can injure skin at close range and can force water into an electrical enclosure.

If you are using a detergent, never combine a bleach-based product with an acidic cleaner such as a rust remover or a masonry etcher. That combination releases chlorine gas. One product, one purpose, thorough rinse in between.

Siding should not be cleaned with high pressure at all. The correct approach is a detergent applied at low pressure, allowed to dwell, then rinsed with a wide fan aimed downward. Forcing water upward into lap joints pushes it behind the panels, where it causes rot and hidden mildew.
