Why the angle changes everything

Every nozzle receives the same pressure and the same flow from the pump. What changes is how much area that water is spread across when it lands.

A 0 degree tip concentrates the entire stream into a single point. A 40 degree tip fans the same water across a band several inches wide. The force per square inch drops sharply as the angle widens, even though the machine setting never moved.

That is why the nozzle is the real pressure control on a pressure washer. Combined with distance, it is how a single machine safely handles both a driveway and a set of patio chairs. The material limits are in what PSI each surface can take.

Red, 0 degrees: leave it in the case

The red tip puts all the machine energy into a spot about the size of a pencil point.

It will carve a line into concrete, cut through a deck board, strip paint down to bare wood in a stripe, and it can cause a serious injection injury if it contacts skin. Those injuries look minor on the surface and are treated as emergencies.

There is very little it can do that a yellow tip cannot do more safely. If you do use it, keep it moving, hold it well back, and never point it at anything soft, painted, or alive.

Yellow, 15 degrees: heavy work on hard surfaces

Yellow is for material that is genuinely stuck to something genuinely hard: a set-in oil stain, paint removal on concrete, or a build-up on a shop slab.

It is still aggressive enough to etch concrete if you hold it in one place, and it is far too strong for wood, siding, mortar, or anything with a finish on it.

The practical rule is to reach for yellow only after green has failed, and only on concrete or metal.

Green, 25 degrees: the general purpose tip

Green does most of the real work on residential hard surfaces. Driveways, walkways, patios, steps, retaining walls, and pavers all clean well with it.

It is aggressive enough to lift algae and traffic film from concrete, and wide enough that a steady pass leaves an even result rather than a carved one.

White, 40 degrees: gentle rinsing

White is a rinsing tip. It suits siding rinse-down after a soft wash treatment, vehicles, patio furniture, fencing, and any painted surface you have already decided is sound enough to touch.

It is the widest of the high pressure tips, but it is still not a soft wash. On siding, the correct use is a downward-angled rinse from a distance, never a stream driven up under a lap joint.

For anything with a delicate coating, use white and back farther away rather than switching to a tip you assume is gentle enough.

Black: the soap tip that is not really a nozzle

The black tip has the widest opening of the set, which drops the pressure at the pump enough to let a downstream detergent injector actually pull soap.

That is the part people miss. On a machine with a downstream injector, no soap will be drawn at all unless the black tip is fitted. Nothing is broken -- the pressure is simply too high for the injector to siphon. The mechanics are in how the black soap tip feeds the injector.

Apply soap with black, let it dwell, then switch to a rinsing tip. Do not try to clean with the black tip; it has almost no cleaning force by design.

Turbo and adjustable tips

A turbo or rotary nozzle spins a 0 degree stream in a small cone. It covers ground faster than a straight zero and is popular for heavy concrete work.

It is still a zero degree stream at any given instant, so it belongs on concrete and masonry only. It will destroy wood, siding, and coatings quickly.

Adjustable all-in-one nozzles are convenient but they encourage twisting the tip narrower mid-job, which is exactly how people wreck a deck board they were previously cleaning safely.

Matching a tip to a job

Start every unfamiliar surface with white, hold the wand well back, and test a hidden area. Step down to green only if white is not moving the soil.

Change the distance before you change the tip. Moving from eighteen inches to eight inches often accomplishes what switching to a narrower nozzle would, with far more control.

And remember that some surfaces have no correct tip. Roofing, stucco, fiber cement, and older mortar joints are soft wash jobs, not nozzle-choice jobs -- see surfaces you should never pressure wash.

Never work a wand from a ladder regardless of tip. The recoil is real and the platform is not stable enough to absorb it.
