What Is pH, in Plain Terms?

It is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a water-based solution is. Zero is strongly acidic, 14 is strongly alkaline, and 7 -- pure water -- is neutral. Below 7 is acid, above 7 is alkaline.

The important detail people miss is that the scale is logarithmic. Each whole number is a tenfold change. A pH 10 solution is ten times more alkaline than pH 9 and a hundred times more alkaline than pH 8. That is why a prespray that reads "just a couple of points high" for wool is actually far outside the safe range.

Where Common Things Sit on the Scale

Professional presprays live in that 9 to 11 band for a reason, and the strongest degreasers go higher still. Those are not products for a homeowner to improvise with.

Why Alkaline Solutions Clean Better

Most household soil that makes carpet look dirty is oily -- cooking vapor, skin oils, road film from shoes. Alkalinity is what breaks the bond between that oily soil and the fiber.

Part of the mechanism is saponification: an alkali reacting with fatty soil to produce a soap-like compound that rinses away. Alkalinity also helps surfactants work more efficiently and helps soil stay suspended so it does not redeposit. Why alkaline cleaners work best on oily soil goes deeper.

The trade-off is that the same property that attacks oily soil is hard on some fibers, and any alkaline residue left in the carpet keeps attracting soil.

What Are the Fiber Limits?

Wool is the strict one: keep it in roughly pH 5 to 8, and never use high heat or oxygen bleach on it. Nylon tolerates a wider range but stain-resist treatments degrade under sustained high alkalinity. Polyester and olefin are chemically tough and mostly indifferent to pH.

Wool is a protein fiber, chemically closer to hair than to plastic. Strong alkali attacks the bonds that give it structure, causing yellowing, harshness, and permanent loss of strength. It is not a gradual risk you can push -- the damage is real and irreversible.

Nylon and Stain-Resist Finishes

Nylon is the most common residential carpet fiber, and it is dye-site sensitive. That is why acid dyes -- red drink mix, food coloring -- bond so stubbornly to it, and why stain-resist finishes exist in the first place.

Those finishes work by occupying dye sites so a spill cannot reach them. Repeated cleaning with strongly alkaline products degrades them faster than normal wear does, which is a slow, invisible cost. It is one of several reasons professionals follow an alkaline prespray with an acid rinse.

Why the Rinse pH Matters as Much as the Prespray

Whatever alkalinity is left in the carpet when the crew leaves keeps working -- on the fiber, and as a soil magnet. Rinsing with plain water dilutes it but does not change its pH.

An acidic rinse, usually somewhere around pH 4 to 6, neutralizes the leftover alkalinity through an actual reaction. It also helps prevent cellulosic browning, which is when natural fibers in a jute backing yellow and wick discoloration up into the pile after an alkaline cleaning.

Safety Rules Around pH

Two rules are absolute in any home.

Never mix chlorine bleach with an acid -- vinegar, a toilet bowl cleaner, or a descaler. The reaction releases chlorine gas. Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or an ammonia-containing cleaner either; that combination releases chloramine gas. Neither is a hypothetical hazard.

And be careful with the folk chemistry. Vinegar plus baking soda in one container just fizzes into salt water and carbon dioxide, neutralizing both. It makes a satisfying reaction and a very weak cleaner.
