What Does an Oxidizer Do to a Stain?

That is a meaningful difference from detergent chemistry. A surfactant suspends soil so it can be rinsed away and physically leaves the building. An oxidizer changes the soil chemically in place, so the fiber looks clean because the color is destroyed.

Which Oxidizers Show Up in Carpet Work?
Three appear regularly, and they are not interchangeable. Chlorine bleach is on the list mainly as a warning.

Chlorine bleach on carpet does not create a stain, it creates dye loss. The color is gone from the fiber permanently, and no cleaning removes it. The only remedies are dyeing the spot or cutting in a patch.
Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, with any acid such as vinegar or a toilet bowl cleaner, or with rubbing alcohol. Those combinations release toxic gases. Never combine hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in one container either.
What Stains Respond to an Oxidizer?
Oxidizers work best on organic, colored, water-based stains: coffee, tea, red wine, fruit juice, grass, mustard, and many pet accident discolorations after the soil itself has been cleaned out.
They are much less useful on oily petroleum soil, on rust, on ink, and on synthetic dye stains such as a red drink mix on nylon. That last case is the classic trap. Acid dyes bond to nylon dye sites, and the correct approach is a reducing agent plus heat, not more peroxide.
Order also matters. Clean the soil first with the right chemistry, then oxidize the leftover color. On urine and food, that means starting with the approach in what enzymes digest, because dumping an oxidizer onto raw soil wastes product and can set the mess.
Why Wool and Oxidizers Do Not Mix
Wool is a protein fiber and it cannot take oxygen bleach, high alkalinity, or high heat. Oxygen bleach in solution is alkaline, and that combination attacks the protein structure, yellowing and weakening the yarn.

Silk, viscose, and rayon are even less forgiving. Viscose and rayon are damaged by water alone, so an oxidizing solution is a fast way to ruin a rug. Cotton and jute can yellow. When you do not know the fiber, assume it is the sensitive one until proven otherwise.

How to Test Before You Oxidize
Testing is not optional, and it takes about five minutes.
- Find a hidden area: inside a closet, under a piece of furniture that never moves, or on a scrap from installation.
- Apply a small amount of the product exactly as you would use it on the stain.
- Press a white cotton towel into the spot and check for color transfer, which means the carpet dye is moving.
- Let the test area dry completely before judging it, since some damage only appears once the fiber dries.
- If there is any lightening, yellowing, or dye on the towel, stop.
When you do proceed, use the weakest effective concentration, keep dwell time short, work from the outside of the stain inward, and rinse thoroughly. Sunlight and heat both accelerate peroxide, so an oxidized area near a window can keep lightening after you walk away.
What Oxidizers Cannot Fix
An oxidizer cannot restore dye that has already been destroyed, cannot repair a burn or a cut, and cannot remove a stain caused by fiber damage rather than a deposit. It also does not sterilize carpet. Cleaning and oxidizing reduce what is present in the pile without making it a sanitary surface.
