What each range captures
MERV 1 to 4 stops lint, carpet fibers, and large dust. These are the thin blue fiberglass panels, and their real job is protecting the equipment rather than the air you breathe.
MERV 5 to 8 adds mold spores, dust mite debris, and most pet dander. MERV 8 is the common baseline for a residential system and captures a large share of ordinary household dust.
MERV 9 to 12 adds finer dust, some pollen fractions, and a meaningful portion of particles down toward one micron. This is a reasonable step up for homes with pets or heavy dust.
MERV 13 to 16 begins capturing the smallest tested band with useful efficiency, including fine smoke particles and bacteria-sized material. MERV 13 is the level often recommended when air quality is a specific concern, and it is the highest most residential systems tolerate.

Will a higher MERV filter damage my furnace?

The airflow tradeoff, in plain terms
A filter is a compromise between what it stops and what it lets through.
More filtration means denser media, and denser media means the blower has to pull harder. That extra resistance shows up as reduced airflow, higher energy use, and more strain on the motor.
There are two ways to buy filtration without buying restriction. The first is surface area: a deeply pleated filter has far more media in the same frame, so air passes through more slowly and with less resistance. The second is thickness. A four or five inch media cabinet filter can reach MERV 13 or higher with less pressure drop than a one inch filter at MERV 11, simply because there is so much more media.

MERV, HEPA, and the other scales
HEPA is a separate standard entirely, requiring at least 99.97 percent capture at 0.3 microns. It is used in vacuums and air purifiers, and it is almost never appropriate in a residential duct system because the resistance is far beyond what a home blower can handle. Manufacturer marketing scales appear on retail packaging under proprietary names, usually with much larger numbers that make a filter look more capable than its MERV. Those scales are not interchangeable with MERV and are not comparable between brands. Look for the actual MERV value, which is generally printed somewhere on the packaging.
FPR is a retailer scale used in some stores, and it also does not map cleanly onto MERV. When in doubt, the MERV number is the one with a published test method behind it.

What a filter does not do
It does not remove odors or gases unless it carries an activated carbon layer, which is a different mechanism from particle capture.
It does not filter air that never reaches it. Air leaking into the system past the filter frame, or through gaps in return ductwork, bypasses filtration entirely, and a poorly sealed filter slot undoes much of what a high MERV rating buys.
It does not run when the system is off. On a mild day with no heating or cooling call, the filter does nothing unless the fan is set to circulate.
