What MERV filter should I use in my house?

Most homes do well between MERV 8 and MERV 13, and the safe answer is whatever the equipment manufacturer specifies. MERV 8 captures common household dust and pollen with minimal airflow restriction. MERV 11 to 13 captures finer particles but restricts more, and not every residential system is designed to handle it.

The word "adds" matters. A MERV 13 filter does not only catch fine particles -- it catches everything the lower ranges catch plus more. What it also does is present more resistance to airflow.

Why the highest number is not the best choice

An HVAC blower is designed to move a certain volume of air against a certain amount of resistance. A filter is part of that resistance.

Push resistance too high and several things go wrong at once. Airflow drops, so rooms heat and cool unevenly. The blower works harder and uses more electricity. In heating, a restricted return can cause the heat exchanger to run hotter than intended, and in cooling, low airflow across the coil can freeze it. A filter under too much pressure can also bow in its frame, opening a gap where air bypasses it entirely -- so the upgrade ends up filtering less than the filter it replaced.

The practical rule: follow the equipment manufacturer's specification, and if you go higher, go up gradually and watch for uneven temperatures, longer run times, or a noisier blower.

Filter thickness changes the math

A thicker filter has more media surface area, so it can deliver a higher MERV rating with less airflow restriction than a thin filter at the same rating.

If your system has a slot for a four-inch or five-inch media filter, that is usually the better path to higher filtration than forcing a high-MERV one-inch filter into a thin slot. Thicker filters also last much longer between changes, which is covered in how often to change a furnace filter.

MERV is not the only scale you will see

Some retailers use proprietary rating numbers instead. These are internal scales, they are not interchangeable with MERV, and the numbers are often much larger, which makes a filter look better than it is. Look for a MERV equivalent on the label; without one, you cannot compare it to anything.

MERV versus HEPA -- they are different things

MERV is a rating scale that ranks filters against each other. HEPA is a defined performance standard: to be called HEPA, a filter must capture at least 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 microns, the size that is hardest to catch.

They are not two points on one scale. HEPA is a pass-fail specification, MERV is a graded ranking, and HEPA filtration is far more restrictive than a typical residential air handler is built to pull air through.

That is why true HEPA belongs in portable air purifiers, vacuums, and purpose-built equipment, not in a standard furnace slot. Fit and seal beat rating every time

The best-rated filter in the world does nothing for the air that goes around it.

Measure the slot and buy the exact size -- nominal sizes on packaging are rounded, so check the actual dimensions printed in smaller type. The filter should fill the opening with no gaps at the edges and sit flat against the retainer without bowing.

Check the airflow arrow on the frame. It points toward the blower, in the direction air travels. Backwards installation deforms the media and reduces capture.

What a filter does and does not do for you

A furnace filter protects the equipment first and reduces particles in circulating air second. It only treats air that passes through the system, so it does nothing for settled dust on surfaces and nothing in a room while the system is off.

Better filtration can reduce exposure to some airborne particles. It does not treat, prevent, or cure allergies, asthma, or any other condition, and no filter eliminates allergens from a home.
