Two Problems From One Spill

What Should You Do First?
Lift any thick lotion with the edge of a spoon, working from the outside of the spill toward the middle. Then press a dry white towel onto the spot with straight-down pressure and hold. Change to a clean towel section and repeat several times.
Do not rub and do not add water yet. Rubbing drives the oily base toward the backing and spreads it outward at the same time. Patient blotting with dry towels removes more of an oily lotion than any single application of product will, and it costs nothing.
Step One: The Solvent Pass
Apply a dry solvent spotter to a white towel rather than pouring it on the carpet, press it into the spot, dwell about a minute, then blot into a clean section. Repeat until the towel stops picking up residue, working outside in on every pass.
Ventilate the room, since these products are usually flammable, and spot test in a closet first because some solvents soften carpet backing adhesive. Why Does Sunscreen Turn Orange?
Because avobenzone reacts with iron to form a rust-colored compound in the fiber. The reaction needs iron and moisture, so it often shows up days after the spill, after a cleaning attempt with tap water, or where the lotion sat against a metal furniture leg.
That means the orange is chemically closer to a rust stain than to a food stain. Detergent does nothing to it. Time does not fade it. And crucially, an oxidizer such as oxygen bleach or peroxide can drive the reaction further rather than reversing it.
Step Two: The Acid Treatment for Orange
Rust-type discoloration responds to acid. A carpet-safe rust remover, usually built on oxalic or a similar acid, is the correct product. Apply it to a white towel, press it onto the spot, follow the label's dwell time exactly, then blot and rinse thoroughly with cool water.

What Not to Use
Skip oxygen bleach and hydrogen peroxide on the orange. They lighten carpet dye and can push the iron reaction further along. Skip chlorine bleach entirely. Skip alkaline all-purpose sprays, which do nothing useful here and leave residue that attracts soil.

Preventing the Orange in the First Place
Speed is the best prevention. The iron reaction needs time and moisture, so removing the oily lotion the same day usually means there is nothing left to react. That is another argument for a solvent pass rather than a water rinse as the first move.
Keeping metal furniture feet off damp carpet helps, as does using coasters or glides under legs. Mineral-heavy tap water contributes iron too, which is one more reason to rinse with as little water as the job needs and dry the area quickly with a fan.
