Take the Seat Pad Off
Turn the chair upside down onto a table. On most dining chairs you will find four screws through the corner blocks into the underside of the seat pad. Back them out, keep the screws in a labeled bag, and lift the pad free.
This solves three problems at once. Finished wood no longer risks white blush marks from standing water. You get access to the pad edges and the underside, where soil hides against the frame. And the pad can dry standing on edge with air on both faces.
Photograph the underside before you unscrew it if there are shims, washers, or a specific orientation. Seat pads are often not square.
Read the Code Before You Buy a Product
Dining seats carry the same lettering system as any other upholstery. W means water-based cleaners are safe, S means solvent only, WS means either, X means vacuum only. The tag is usually stapled to the underside of the pad, which is easy to read once the pad is off.

The Full Sequence
- Unscrew and remove the pad. Bag the screws.

- Test a hidden area on the underside near the staple line and let it dry fully.

- Follow with a water-based cleaner only if the code permits, for sugary and water-soluble residue.
- Blot dry with a white towel pressed straight down, changing to a clean area of towel each time.
- Stand the pad on edge with a fan and give it several hours.
- Reattach only when fully dry -- check by pressing hard and feeling for cool dampness.

Never Soak the Foam
The pad is a thin layer of open-cell foam over a plywood or webbing base. Foam absorbs water readily and gives it up slowly, and a plywood base underneath means the water has nowhere to drain.

Keep the moisture at the surface. If the fabric is visibly wet rather than just damp, you have used too much.
Chairs You Cannot Take Apart
Fully upholstered dining chairs and banquettes do not come apart, so the wood-and-drainage problems stay. Work at lower moisture than you would on a removable pad, keep a dry cloth ready for the legs and frame, and put a fan on the seat immediately.
Cane, rush, and woven seats are a different material entirely. Those are vacuum-and-damp-cloth surfaces at most, and soaking them causes sagging and breakage.
When to Call Someone
A full dining set is more work than it looks -- six or eight seats is a real job with a real drying window. Add an S or X code, a light-colored fabric with set-in wine or sauce, or a set you cannot replace, and it is worth an inspection.
