Performance fabric is stain resistant, not stain proof -- it buys time to blot rather than making spills impossible. There are two different mechanisms behind the label: a stain-resistant fiber built in at manufacture, which is permanent, and a topical finish sprayed on, which wears off and needs reapplication. Both still need rinsing, because leftover cleaning residue attracts soil regardless.
"Performance Fabric" Is a Marketing Category
There is no single standard behind the term. It covers several different technologies, and the important question is always which one you have.
Solution dyed fibers. Color is added to the polymer before the fiber is extruded, so the color goes all the way through rather than being applied to the surface. Acrylic and olefin are the common examples. These resist fading and, on many of them, aggressive cleaning that would strip a surface-dyed fabric.
Inherently stain-resistant fibers. Some fibers resist water-based staining by their chemistry rather than by a coating. Polyester and olefin both repel water. Certain engineered fibers extend this further, and the resistance does not wash out because it is not a coating.
Topical finishes. A fluorochemical or silicone treatment applied to the finished fabric that makes liquids bead. This is a coating and it wears off with use and cleaning.
Woven-in liquid barriers. Some upholstery includes a membrane or a dense backing that stops liquid from reaching the cushion.
A fabric marketed as performance may use one of these or three, and the care instructions differ. The tag and the manufacturer specification are the only reliable source.
Does Performance Fabric Actually Stop Stains?
It slows them down rather than stopping them. A spill on treated fabric beads and sits on the surface for a period of time -- often minutes rather than seconds -- which gives you a window to blot it up before it penetrates. Miss that window, and the spill goes in like it would on any other fabric.
That is a genuine and useful benefit. It is not the same as being stain proof, and the gap between those two ideas causes most of the disappointment people report.
What It Does Not Resist
Three categories defeat most performance fabrics.
Oil. Body oil, sunscreen, food grease, and hair product still bond to synthetic fibers, and olefin and polyester are both oil-attracting by nature. The headrest band on a performance fabric sofa develops exactly the same way it does on ordinary polyester. Polyester blend upholstery care covers that mechanism.
Dye transfer. A finish that repels liquid does not stop dye migrating from a wet pair of jeans pressed against light fabric. That transfer is a chemical event rather than a spill.
Abrasion. Nothing in a performance treatment prevents fibers from wearing, pilling, or crushing. That is a construction and fiber resilience issue.
Time. A treated spill left overnight is a stain. Resistance is a delay, not a barrier.
Rinsing Still Matters
This is the part people skip because the fabric is supposed to be easy.
When you clean any upholstery, cleaning product left in the fibers attracts soil. A performance fabric cleaned with a foaming spray and never rinsed will re-soil faster than the same fabric left alone, and the owner will conclude the finish stopped working.
Use as little product as possible, and follow with plain water on a clean cloth if the code permits water. Blot dry. On a fabric coded S, follow the solvent method instead and let it flash off.
The other reason to rinse is the finish itself. Detergent residue sitting on a topical treatment can mask the beading effect, which makes a perfectly good finish look failed.
The Code Still Governs
Performance branding does not override the cleaning code. Check the tag for W, S, WS, or X before anything.
Most performance upholstery for indoor furniture is coded W or WS, which is part of why it is popular. But not all of it is, and microfiber -- often sold in performance ranges -- is frequently coded S because water rings it. Microfiber is usually solvent only covers that case, and the cleaning code chart covers all four letters.

Topical Finishes Wear Off
If your fabric relies on a sprayed-on treatment, the beading will diminish over one to three years of normal use, faster in the seat and arms where abrasion is highest and where body oil accumulates.
That is expected behavior, not a defect. Finishes can be reapplied, either by a professional after a cleaning or with a consumer product, and reapplication after cleaning is standard practice because cleaning removes some of what remains.
Two things to know before buying that. It works best on a fabric that has just been properly cleaned, since applying it over soil locks the soil in. And it does not turn a fabric into something it is not -- a light plain fabric in a high-use house is still going to show wear.

Solution dyed and inherently resistant fibers do not have this problem, because there is nothing on the surface to wear away. That is the strongest argument for choosing them at purchase.
Everyday Care
Vacuum weekly with an upholstery tool. Grit abrades both the fiber and any topical finish.
Blot spills immediately even though the fabric resists them -- the resistance is a window, and using it is the whole point.
Rotate cushions so wear and compression spread evenly.
Keep the headrest zone protected with a throw if anyone in the house uses hair product or sunscreen, because that is where performance fabrics still fail.
And clean the whole piece periodically rather than only spot cleaning. Even resistant fabric accumulates a general soil load, and a piece that has only ever been spot cleaned develops an uneven appearance where the clean spots stand out from a gradually greying field.
