Read the Old Filter Before You Shop

The fastest way to buy the right filter is to pull the one in your system and read its edge. Manufacturers print the nominal size right on the cardboard frame, usually as three numbers: width, height, and depth.

If the printing is worn off, measure the old filter with a tape and round up to the nearest common size. Then confirm against the slot itself, because a previous owner may have been buying the wrong filter for years.

What Is the Difference Between Nominal and Actual Size?

Nominal size is the rounded label used for ordering, and actual size is what the filter measures. A filter sold as 16 by 25 by 1 typically measures about 15.5 by 24.5 by 0.75 inches, because the slot needs clearance to slide the filter in and out. That gap is intentional, not a defect.

The problem comes when you buy a filter listed only by actual dimensions from a specialty supplier and treat it as nominal. It will be too big or leave a gap.

Filter Depth Changes Everything

Depth is the specification people ignore and the one that matters most for performance.

A one-inch filter has limited media area, so raising its efficiency raises its resistance quickly. Four and five-inch media cabinets hold a deeply pleated filter with several times the surface area, which delivers higher efficiency at lower resistance and lasts far longer between changes.

You cannot simply buy a thicker filter, though. The slot depth is fixed by the cabinet. Converting a one-inch slot to a four-inch media cabinet is duct work, not a shopping decision.

Common depths are 1 inch, 2 inches, 4 inches, and 5 inches. Buy for the slot you have.

What Does the MERV Rating Mean?

MERV is a scale from 1 to 16 describing how well a filter captures particles across several size ranges, with higher numbers capturing smaller particles. Most residential systems are designed for something in the MERV 8 to 13 band. MERV 8 handles dust and lint, MERV 11 adds finer dust and dander, and MERV 13 captures smaller particles including some smoke.

Above that range you are into filters designed for commercial equipment with stronger blowers. Putting one in a residential slot usually restricts airflow more than the system tolerates.

Some brands use their own numbering instead of MERV. Those scales are not interchangeable, so look for a MERV equivalence printed on the package.

Why Air Filter Pressure Drop Matters

Pressure drop is the resistance a filter adds to airflow, and every filter has some. A denser filter in a shallow slot adds a lot.

When airflow drops too far, several things go wrong. The blower works harder and uses more electricity. Heat exchangers can run hotter than intended. In cooling season, low airflow across an evaporator coil can let it freeze, which stops cooling entirely and can damage the compressor.

The practical guidance is to stay within the range your equipment manual specifies, and to change filters before they load up. A MERV 13 filter changed on time often restricts less than a MERV 8 filter left in for a year.

Pleats, Media, and Frames

Pleat count is a rough proxy for surface area. More pleats per foot means more media in the same frame, which generally means better capture and lower resistance for a given efficiency.

Media type matters too. Electrostatically charged synthetic media captures well when new and loses some of that charge over time, so its real-world performance drifts. Mechanical media relies on fiber density and holds its rating more steadily.

Washable and permanent filters exist and are usually low efficiency. They save money and catch far less. If you use one, it must be completely dry before reinstalling, since a damp filter grows odor and adds resistance.

Frame rigidity is worth a look. A flimsy cardboard frame can bow under airflow and open a bypass gap along an edge.

Installation and Replacement Intervals

Every filter has an airflow arrow printed on the frame. It points in the direction the air travels, which is toward the blower and the furnace. Installing one backward puts the reinforcing mesh on the wrong side and lets the pleats collapse.

Typical replacement intervals look like this:

  • One-inch filters: every 1 to 3 months
  • Two-inch filters: every 2 to 4 months
  • Four and five-inch media filters: every 6 to 12 months

Shorten those intervals if you have pets, a smoker in the house, ongoing construction, or a heavy wildfire smoke season. Write the install date on the frame edge in marker.

Filters Are One Layer, Not the Whole Answer

A filter cleans the air passing through the system while the blower runs. It does nothing for settled dust on surfaces, and it does nothing while the system is off.
