Coverage Claims Are the Weakest Number on the Box

Manufacturers list a coverage area in square feet, and that figure is not standardized. Two units claiming 500 square feet can perform very differently, because each chose its own assumption about how many times per hour it needs to filter the room.

Filtering a room once an hour technically counts. It is also close to useless when the room keeps generating dust, dander, and cooking particles.

So the coverage number tells you the manufacturer's marketing decision, not the machine's capability. The capability figure is CADR.

What Is CADR and How Do I Use It?

CADR stands for clean air delivery rate, measured in cubic feet per minute, and it tells you how much fully filtered air the unit delivers. It is published as three numbers, for smoke, dust, and pollen, because particle size affects performance. A widely used guideline is that the smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's floor area in square feet, assuming an eight-foot ceiling.

So a 300 square foot bedroom wants a smoke CADR of about 200 or higher. A 150 square foot office wants roughly 100.

Smoke is the number to use because smoke particles are the smallest of the three and the hardest to capture. A unit that handles smoke handles the rest.

Air Changes Per Hour Is the Better Question

CADR sizing is a shortcut for a more useful idea: how many times per hour the machine can turn over the room's air.

Two air changes per hour is a light background level. Four to five is what people generally aim for when dust, dander, or wildfire smoke is the concern. Higher ceilings, open floor plans, and rooms with a lot of air leakage all lower the real number.

If you want to be precise, multiply room square footage by ceiling height to get volume, then compare it to the unit's airflow. If you want the shortcut, oversize by one step. A larger unit running on a low, quiet setting beats a small one screaming at maximum.

Filter Types and What They Cost

Most purifiers stack a pre-filter, a high-efficiency particulate filter, and a carbon layer. Each does a different job.

The pre-filter catches hair and large debris, and it is usually washable. The particulate filter is what actually captures fine dust, pollen, and dander, and it must be replaced rather than washed unless it is specifically labeled washable. The carbon layer adsorbs odors and gases, and it saturates on its own schedule, usually faster than the particulate filter.

Costs vary widely. Replacement particulate filters commonly run about $30 to $90 each, carbon filters about $15 to $50, and combined cartridges roughly $40 to $120. Most households land somewhere in the $60 to $200 per year range depending on how many units they run.

Check the part price and stock availability before you buy the machine. A cheap purifier with an annual filter bill of $90 to $130 is not cheap.

Noise Is What Decides Whether It Runs

A purifier only cleans air while it is on, and people turn off machines that annoy them.

Published noise ratings are usually given as a range from lowest to highest speed, in decibels. Roughly 25 to 35 decibels is comfortable for a bedroom, 40 to 50 is noticeable but tolerable in a living space, and above 55 is loud enough that most people run it only while out of the room.

The practical move is to buy a unit large enough that its medium speed handles your room. That way you get real airflow at a livable noise level instead of maximum speed all night.

Avoid Ozone Generators

Some devices market themselves as air cleaners while producing ozone deliberately. Ozone is a lung irritant, and it is not a safe way to clean indoor air in an occupied space.

Ionizers are a separate category that can produce small amounts of ozone as a byproduct. If a unit has an ionizer, look for the ability to turn it off, and check that the model appears on a state air-quality agency's list of certified devices.

Mechanical filtration through a real filter is the approach with the least downside. It removes particles rather than reacting with them.

What an Air Purifier Cannot Do

A purifier reduces airborne particles in the room it is in. It does not treat, prevent, or cure asthma, allergies, or any other condition, and anyone with symptoms should talk to a doctor.

It also does not fix a source. A purifier running next to an active mold problem is treating a symptom, and mold remediation is a separate licensed trade. The same is true for a pest issue or an unvented gas appliance.

Put the unit where you spend time, not in a hallway. Give it a foot or two of clearance on the intake and outlet sides, and keep it off thick pile that blocks a bottom intake.

One purifier serves one room. Doors matter more than square footage, so a unit sized for an open plan will underperform if the space is really three rooms with doorways.
