Anything not built for that job causes problems.
The rental counter version and the grocery aisle version are usually equivalent. What matters is the words "for use in carpet cleaning machines" and "low foaming," not the label design or the price.
Why Low Foam Matters More Than Cleaning Power
Foam is the enemy of an extractor. When suds reach the recovery tank, they trip the float shutoff early, and the machine either stops vacuuming or starts pushing foam through the motor. Either way, recovery collapses and your carpet gets wetter.
That is exactly what happens when laundry detergent ruins the machine. Laundry and dish products are designed to foam because foam signals cleaning to a consumer. In a carpet machine, foam is a failure mode.

How Much Should You Actually Use?
Less than you think, and less than the cap suggests. Measure to the line on the cap, then start at that amount or slightly under. Doubling the dose does not double the cleaning. It doubles the residue.
Soil level should adjust the dose, not your optimism. Light maintenance cleaning takes less than the label rate. Why More Soap Makes Carpet Dirtier
Detergent works by grabbing soil and holding it in suspension so the vacuum can pull it away. Any detergent left in the pile keeps doing that after you leave, except now it grabs the dirt off your shoes and holds it right there.
That is the mechanism behind re-soiling, and it is why carpet cleaned with too much soap looks worse a month later than carpet cleaned with almost none. Residue makes carpet re-soil, and rinse matters more than soap.
The Rinse Pass Is Not Optional
After your cleaning passes, dump the recovery tank, rinse it, and refill the clean tank with plain hot water and no detergent at all. Then run the same lanes again. This pulls residue back out, and it is the single step that separates a good DIY job from a sticky one.
Some people add a small amount of white vinegar to the rinse water to help neutralize alkaline detergent residue. That is reasonable on synthetic carpet at a mild dilution. Do not use it on wool, and never mix it with hydrogen peroxide, bleach, or any ammonia product in the same container.
What Should Never Go In the Tank
This list is short and non-negotiable.
- Dish soap. High foam, heavy residue, no rinse aid. It turns carpet into a dirt magnet.
- Laundry detergent. Same foam problem, plus optical brighteners that can leave carpet looking oddly light or blotchy under sunlight.
- Bleach of any kind. It strips dye. Bleach spots on carpet are dye loss, not stains, and they cannot be cleaned out.
- General purpose floor cleaner or all purpose spray. Wrong pH, wrong foam profile, often leaves a film.
- Fabric softener. Leaves an oily coating that attracts soil immediately.
- Any two products combined. Never mix bleach with ammonia or with an acid, and never combine hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in one container.
Does the Fiber Change What You Can Use?
Yes, significantly. Fiber decides the pH ceiling, the heat ceiling, and whether a machine should touch it at all. Get this wrong and no amount of good technique saves the carpet.
Nylon handles neutral to mildly alkaline detergent well but is dye-site sensitive, so acid dyes from red drink mix can bond permanently. Polyester and triexta resist water-based stains but hold oily soil, so they benefit from a solvent-based pre-spray on grease spots. Olefin is oil-loving and responds well to low-moisture methods. Wool takes no oxygen bleach, no high heat, and no high alkalinity, and should sit between roughly pH 5 and 8, which is why wool should not be DIY cleaned with a rental machine. Viscose and rayon are ruined by water entirely.

Test Before You Commit
Pick a hidden spot: inside a closet, under where a couch sits, behind a door. Apply your mixed solution to a white towel, press it into the pile for 30 seconds, and look at the towel. Color on the towel means the dye is moving, and you should stop.
Do this every time you change products, and always on an area rug whose fiber you cannot confirm.
