What Is Etching on Stone and Why It Is Not a Stain.

Etching is acid physically dissolving the surface of stone. It is damage, not a stain, so it cannot be cleaned off. Here is what causes it and the real fix.

What Etching Actually Is

Marble, travertine, limestone, onyx, and most other calcium-based stones are made largely of calcium carbonate. So are the shells and coral they formed from.

Acid reacts with calcium carbonate and dissolves it. When a drop of lemon juice, vinegar, wine, cola, tomato sauce, or an acidic cleaner sits on a polished marble counter, it eats a microscopically thin layer off the surface. The polish there is gone. What is left scatters light instead of reflecting it, so it reads as a dull spot, a water-ring shape, or a cloudy patch.

The mark is not something on the stone. It is a change to the stone. That single fact explains everything else about how etching behaves.

Etching vs Staining: How Do You Tell Them Apart?

Etching is usually lighter than the surrounding stone and duller, and it shows most clearly at a low angle to the light. A stain is usually darker than the surrounding stone, because a substance has soaked into the pores. Etching sits at the surface; a stain sits inside the material.

There is a quick test. Look at the mark from directly above under bright light, then crouch down and look across it. Etching often nearly disappears from above and becomes obvious in raking light, because it is a difference in reflectivity. A stain looks the same from every angle, because it is a difference in color.

The two also respond in opposite ways. A stain can often be drawn out with a poultice. An etch mark laughs at every cleaner ever made.

Which Stones Etch

Marble, travertine, limestone, and onyx etch readily. These are the high-risk materials, and honed finishes hide etching better than polished ones.

Granite is much more acid-resistant because it is largely quartz and feldspar. It does not etch the way marble does. What acid does damage on granite is the sealer, which degrades and leaves the stone more absorbent.

Engineered quartz does not etch in the marble sense, because the mineral content is quartz. It is resin-bound, though, so strong acids, bleach, solvents, and heat damage the resin and can leave a dull or discolored patch.

Slate and soapstone are generally acid-tolerant, though soapstone marks easily in other ways.

Concrete counters carry cement, which is alkaline and vulnerable to acid, so they etch too.

If you are not certain what a surface is, treat it as acid-sensitive.

What Causes Etching in a Normal Kitchen

The list is dull and short, which is the point. Etching is almost always ordinary food and ordinary cleaning products.

Lemon and lime juice, vinegar and salad dressing, wine, coffee, cola and other carbonated drinks, tomato products, mustard, yogurt and buttermilk, and fruit juice all etch. So do many bathroom cleaners, tub and tile sprays, descalers, toilet bowl cleaners, and any product advertised as removing hard water spots -- all of those are acidic by design.

Can Etching Be Repaired?

Light etching on polished marble can often be improved or removed with a marble polishing compound, which contains a fine abrasive that re-polishes the damaged area. Deeper etching, large affected areas, and honed finishes generally require a stone restoration professional who will hone and re-polish the surface mechanically.

This is worth being honest about. A do-it-yourself polishing paste works best on a small, isolated mark on a polished surface. Used across a wide area, it very easily creates a shiny patch that is more visible than the etching was. Matching sheen across a countertop is a skill.

Refinishing is a real trade with diamond abrasives and wet polishing equipment, and it is the same trade that handles scratch removal and re-honing. If a counter has years of accumulated etch marks, professional restoration and then resealing usually costs less than replacement and looks materially better than any spot treatment.

Current Market Reality

Stone restoration pricing moves with the size of the area, the finish being matched, the hardness of the stone, and how much travel and setup a small job requires. Minimum service charges mean a single etch mark often prices similarly to several, so people commonly wait and address a whole counter at once. Get more than one estimate, and ask to see the contractor's work on the same stone and the same finish.

Sealing Does Not Prevent Etching

This is the most persistent misunderstanding about stone care, and it costs people money.

A sealer is an absorption inhibitor. It slows liquids from soaking into the pores, which reduces staining. It does not put a chemical-resistant shield on top of the stone, and acid reaches the calcium carbonate through it. A perfectly sealed marble counter etches exactly as fast as an unsealed one.

Living With Stone Without Constant Damage

Wipe acidic spills immediately. Seconds matter with lemon juice on polished marble.

Use trivets, boards, and coasters, especially under wine glasses and citrus. FAQ

Can etching be cleaned off?

No. There is nothing on the surface to remove. Cleaning products, no matter how strong, cannot restore material the acid dissolved. The only routes are re-polishing the affected area or accepting the mark. Anyone selling a cleaner that removes etching is describing something else.

Why did my counter etch even though it was sealed?

Because sealers reduce absorption, not acid reaction. The sealer slows a liquid from soaking in, but acid still contacts and dissolves the calcium carbonate at the surface. Sealing prevents staining, which is a different failure mode entirely.

Does granite etch?

Not in the way marble does. Granite is mostly quartz and feldspar and resists acid well. What acid damages on granite is the sealer, which then leaves the stone more prone to staining. Use pH-neutral products on granite anyway.

Is a water ring on marble an etch mark?

Usually yes, if it will not wipe away. A ring that comes off with a damp cloth was mineral residue from hard water. A ring that persists and looks duller than the surrounding surface is etching, most often from a glass that held something acidic.

Will polishing powder fix a large etched area?

Rarely well. Consumer polishing compounds are designed for isolated marks on a polished finish. Applied over a broad area they tend to create uneven sheen, which draws more attention than the original damage. Large areas belong to a stone restoration professional.

Can I prevent etching completely?

Not while using the surface. You can reduce it a great deal with immediate wiping, boards and coasters, correct cleaners, and a honed rather than polished finish. Some etching over years is a normal characteristic of marble, and many people come to accept it as part of the material.

Does etching get worse over time?

The individual mark does not deepen on its own once the acid is removed. What changes is that new marks accumulate, and eventually a surface reads as generally dull rather than as spotted. That is usually the point at which people have the whole surface refinished.
