Two things happen at once. The soil is now locked in a solid shell rather than glued to the fiber, and the shell is dry, so it has no sticky surface to grab passing dirt. A normal vacuum can beat and pull those crystals out of the pile.
This is why encapsulation is the one detergent-based method that does not automatically cause re-soiling. Ordinary detergent left in the pile stays soft and attracts dirt. A crystallized polymer does not.
What Is Encapsulation Cleaning Used For?
Encapsulation is used mainly for interim cleaning of commercial carpet -- offices, hallways, retail floors, classrooms, and hospitality spaces that need to look good on a frequent schedule and cannot be closed for drying. It suits low pile, dense, glue-down commercial carpet best.
It also works in a home on lightly soiled synthetic carpet, on traffic lanes between deep cleans, or when a room has to be usable the same evening. It is a poor fit for heavily soiled carpet, wool, deep plush pile, and anything with pet contamination in the backing.
The Process Step by Step
Thorough dry vacuuming first. Encapsulation does nothing about dry particulate soil, and dry soil is the majority of what is in a carpet by weight. Skipping this step is the single most common way the method disappoints.
Spot treatment and application. Individual spots are handled separately first, because an encapsulant is a maintenance product rather than a spotter. The polymer solution is then sprayed or spread across the area.
Agitation. A brush works the solution into the pile so it reaches the fiber rather than sitting on top of it. Common tools are a rotary machine with a bonnet or brush, an oscillating pad machine, or a counter rotating brush machine, which is the usual choice because it agitates both directions and stands the pile up.
Drying. One to two hours in typical conditions. Fans shorten it.
Vacuuming. This is the part that actually removes the soil, and it happens after the carpet is dry -- often the next scheduled vacuum pass rather than the same day. A facility that does not vacuum regularly gets very little out of encapsulation.
Encapsulation Compared With Wet Extraction
The honest comparison is that they solve different problems.
Hot water extraction puts hot water and detergent into the carpet under pressure and immediately vacuums it back out, pulling soil from deep in the pile and reaching the backing. It removes far more total soil. It also uses much more water and takes six to twelve hours to dry.
Encapsulation touches the upper part of the pile. It brightens traffic lanes, is fast, is cheap per square foot, and leaves the space usable. It does not reach soil that has settled into the base of the pile or the backing.

How Long Does Encapsulation Carpet Cleaning Take to Dry?
Most encapsulated carpet is dry in one to two hours, and light foot traffic is usually acceptable well before that. The method applies a small fraction of the water a wet extraction does, so there is little moisture to evaporate. Airflow across the surface shortens it further.
What Encapsulation Will Not Do
It will not remove urine contamination, because the problem is in the backing and pad and the method never gets there.
It will not fix heavy greasy soil in a restaurant entry or a gym, where the soil load exceeds what a surface method can lift.
