What Is Cellulosic Browning?
Cellulosic browning is discoloration produced when cellulose, the structural material of plants, releases its tannins into water and those tannins travel to the surface of the carpet and oxidize there.
Cellulose is in jute backings, in sisal and coir rugs, in cotton fringe, in wood subfloors, and in paper and cardboard. Any of those, when wet for long enough, will leach a tea-colored liquid. Anyone who has left a cardboard box on a wet floor has seen exactly this stain in miniature.
Why Does Carpet Turn Brown After Cleaning?
Because the carpet stayed wet long enough for tannins in the backing or the subfloor to dissolve, and slow drying then carried them upward to the pile tips where they oxidized into a visible brown cast. It is the same upward transport that causes wicking, with plant tannin instead of soil as the passenger.

Where the Tannins Come From
Jute secondary backing. Older woven carpet and a great deal of wool broadloom use jute, a plant fiber, as the secondary backing. It is the single most common source.
Natural fiber rugs. Sisal, seagrass, coir, and jute area rugs are cellulose all the way through and brown very readily.
Cotton fringe and cotton foundations on hand-knotted rugs.
The wood subfloor. If water reaches the floor beneath the carpet, tannin from plywood or old planking can wick back up through the pad and carpet.
Old cellulosic spills. Coffee, tea, juice, and food residue left in the pile are themselves tannin sources and will re-dissolve and spread when the area is wet again.
What Cellulosic Browning Looks Like
Color and edge. A tan, yellow-brown, or khaki cast with soft, feathered edges rather than a defined mark. It looks more like the carpet has aged than like something spilled on it.
Location. Often worst at room edges, in the shape of a large irregular patch, or across an entire area that was heavily wetted. On a rug it commonly appears near the fringe and along the perimeter.
Timing. It develops during drying and is at its worst once the carpet is fully dry, not while it is still damp.
Browning Versus Wicking Versus Filtration Lines
Three different post-cleaning marks get called "the carpet turned brown," and telling them apart determines the fix.
Cellulosic browning is a broad tan haze from plant tannin, worst where the carpet was wettest, corrected acid-side.
Wicking is a spot reappearing in the exact footprint of an old spill, caused by soil in the backing, corrected by re-extracting and drying fast.
Filtration soiling is a sharp gray line along a wall or under a door caused by airflow, and it has nothing to do with the cleaning at all.

Why Alkaline Cleaners Make It Worse
This is the part that catches people out. Tannin dissolves more readily and darkens faster in alkaline conditions. A strong alkaline prespray or a high-pH shampoo left in the carpet does not just fail to fix browning; it actively drives it.
So the instinct to attack a brown patch with more detergent is exactly backward. It adds alkalinity, adds water, and extends drying time -- all three causes at once.

A note on limits: hydrogen peroxide and oxygen bleach are sometimes suggested for brown discoloration. Both have real fiber limits, and neither belongs on wool -- which is the fiber most likely to be sitting on a jute backing in the first place. On wool, keep the pH roughly between 5 and 8, keep the heat down, and skip oxygen bleach entirely.
How to Prevent It
Use less water on jute-backed carpet and natural fiber rugs. Low-moisture methods exist for exactly this situation.

Never let a rug sit rolled and damp. A wet natural-fiber rug rolled up overnight will brown severely and often permanently.
Identify the backing before choosing a method. A quick look at a doorway edge or a closet corner usually reveals whether the secondary backing is woven jute or synthetic.
Can It Be Reversed?
Usually yes, if it is treated while it is fresh. Most browning that appears within a day or two of cleaning responds to an acid treatment and proper extraction, sometimes in a single application.
Browning that has been left for weeks or months oxidizes further and becomes harder to shift. Severe cases on natural-fiber rugs may only lighten. And if the source is a wet subfloor or a soaked pad, the discoloration will keep returning until the water problem underneath is dealt with, which is a drying job rather than a cleaning job.
