A layer of latex adhesive is then applied over the back, locking those stitches in place, and a second woven sheet -- the secondary backing -- is pressed into that latex to give the carpet body, dimensional stability, and something for the installer to stretch against. When the latex between those two sheets lets go, the secondary backing separates. The carpet is delaminated.
How Do You Know If Carpet Is Delaminated?
Press on the suspect area with your palm. Delaminated carpet feels soft, loose, and slightly hollow, and the surface shifts independently of the floor beneath it. Sound carpet feels tight and moves with the subfloor as one piece.
That hand test catches most cases. Confirmation usually comes from looking at an exposed edge.
The Signs, In Order of Certainty
Ripples that will not stretch out. A power stretch normally pulls wrinkles flat and they stay flat. Ripples that come straight back, or that appear in the middle of a room rather than running wall to wall, often mean the secondary backing has separated and there is nothing solid left to stretch against.
A soft, spongy, or hollow feel under a specific area, especially where a wrinkle sits.
Visible separation at a doorway, transition, or cut edge, where you can see the secondary backing standing away from the primary or peel it back with a fingernail.
Seams opening or fraying while the carpet face itself is still in good condition.
Latex dust. Old, failed latex crumbles into a fine tan powder. If lifting a corner produces a shower of dust, the adhesive layer is done.
What Causes Carpet to Delaminate?

Water damage. A flood, a slow leak, or a soaked pad left to dry on its own is the fastest route to delamination. Prolonged saturation attacks the latex directly.
Over-wetting during cleaning, particularly repeated over-wetting on already aged carpet. This is uncommon with competent hot water extraction, which uses far less water than people assume, and much more common with heavy shampoo methods or an inexperienced hand on a rental machine.
Manufacturing defects, where the latex was applied thin or cured badly. These show up early in a carpet's life and are a warranty matter.
Mechanical stress, including dragging heavy appliances across the carpet, rolling loads on hard casters, and repeated aggressive rotary scrubbing on old carpet.

Can Delaminated Carpet Be Repaired?
Sometimes, if the area is small and isolated. A repair technician can lift the affected section, clean out failed latex, and re-bond the layers with adhesive, or cut out the failed piece and set in a bonded insert from a remnant.
Whether that is worth doing depends on scale. A single failed patch near a doorway on otherwise sound carpet is a reasonable repair. Delamination that has spread across a room, or crumbling latex found everywhere you lift an edge, means the carpet has reached the end of its structural life and repair money is being spent on borrowed time. Protecting the Carpet You Have
Do not over-wet it. Whether the work is done by a pro or with a rental machine, water sitting in the backing is the enemy. Extra dry passes cost nothing.
Dry fast after any water event. A soaked carpet that is dried within a day usually survives. One left damp for several days often does not.
Deal with leaks quickly. A slow drip under a radiator or behind a dishwasher can delaminate the carpet above it long before anyone sees a stain.
Lift, do not drag, heavy furniture and appliances.
Match the method to the carpet's age. Aggressive scrubbing that is fine on new commercial glue-down carpet is not a good idea on twenty-year-old residential broadloom.
