Cut Pile Versus Loop Pile
The single decision that defines a carpet's character is whether the tufts are cut.
Cut pile means each loop is sheared, giving two upright yarn ends per stitch. It feels softer, looks warmer, hides seams better, and shows footprints and vacuum marks. Plush, saxony, textured saxony, frieze, and cable are all cut piles.
Loop pile leaves the loops intact. It wears extremely well because there are no cut ends to splay, resists matting, and hides soil well, but it can snag on pet claws and can run if a loop is pulled. Berber, level loop, and multi-level loop are the common styles.
Cut and loop combines both in one carpet, cutting some tufts and leaving others to create sculptured patterns.
How Tufts Are Spaced
Two machine settings determine how tightly the tufts sit together, and together they drive density.
Gauge is the spacing between needles across the machine, given as a fraction of an inch. One-tenth gauge is a common residential setting; one-eighth is wider and coarser.
Stitch rate is the number of stitches per inch along the direction the carpet feeds. More stitches per inch means more tufts per row.
Multiply those together and you have tufts per square inch, which combined with pile height gives pile density -- the number that best predicts whether a carpet will mat.
