What Indoor Humidity Level a Home Should Actually Target.

Thirty to fifty percent is the year-round band, but the winter target is lower than most people run. Here is the number and how to measure it properly.

The band and why it exists

Relative humidity is how much water vapor the air holds compared with the most it could hold at that temperature. The usual residential target is 30 to 50 percent, and that band is a compromise between two failure modes.

Above about 60 percent, dust mite populations climb, mold finds the moisture it needs in materials, and musty odor develops in still spaces. Below about 30 percent, static charge builds, wood shrinks and gaps, and skin and nasal passages feel dry.

The middle is not a comfort preference. It is the range where neither set of problems takes hold, which is why it appears in public health and building science guidance alike.

The winter number is lower than the poster says

This is where most homes go wrong, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

Condensation forms when warm humid indoor air meets a surface cold enough to drop it below its dew point. Window glass is that surface. The colder it gets outside, the colder the glass runs, and the lower indoor humidity must be to avoid water forming on it.

A rough working guide for a heated home:

How to measure it properly

A digital hygrometer costs very little and is the only way to know. Guessing from how a room feels is unreliable, because temperature strongly affects the perception.

Buy more than one. Rooms differ enormously. A basement, a bathroom, and a bedroom in the same house can read fifteen or twenty points apart, and the damp room is the one that decides whether you get growth.

Put them where the problems are. A basement, a closet against an exterior wall, a bathroom, and one main living space is a good starting set. Keep them away from vents, exterior doors, and direct sun.

Expect modest accuracy. Inexpensive units are typically within about three to five percentage points, which is fine for this purpose. You are looking for whether you are near 40 or near 65, not for a laboratory figure.

Check the trend, not the moment. Humidity swings after a shower or while cooking. What matters is where a room sits most of the day.

Bringing a high number down

  • Run exhaust fans through and past showers and cooking. This removes moisture at the source, which beats treating it afterward.
  • Vent the dryer outdoors and check that the duct is connected along its full length.
  • Stop drying laundry indoors during damp stretches.

  • Use air conditioning in warm humid weather, which removes moisture as a side effect of cooling.

  • Fix the water. A leaking supply line, a wet crawl space, or a downspout discharging at the foundation beats every appliance you own.

Bringing a low number up

Winter is when homes drift dry, because cold outdoor air holds very little moisture and heating it drops relative humidity further. That is physics rather than a fault in the furnace.

Run it to a target rather than continuously, and watch the windows. If glass starts fogging, you have gone past what the building can carry and the setting needs to come down.

What the number does and does not do

Holding the right band reduces the conditions that dust mites and mold need, reduces musty odor, and protects wood floors and trim from moving. Those are real benefits and they compound over years.
