Why one number controls three problems
Dust mites, mold, and odor look like three separate complaints. They are downstream of the same input.
Dust mites do not drink. They absorb water vapor directly from the air through their bodies, which means ambient humidity is their water supply. Take it away and the population falls, regardless of how clean the house is.
Mold needs moisture in or on a material. High room humidity raises the moisture content of everything porous in the room, and it raises the odds that a cool surface reaches the point where water condenses on it.
Musty odor is produced by microbial growth on damp material. So the smell is not really an odor problem at all -- it is a humidity report you can detect with your nose.

What humidity level should a home hold?

What happens above 60 percent
Dust mite populations climb. Mites need sustained ambient humidity above roughly 50 to 60 percent to take up enough water. In a home held below that, populations decline over weeks without anything else changing.
Mold gets what it needs. Growth depends on moisture in the material rather than in the air, but high room humidity pushes material moisture up and makes condensation on cool surfaces far more likely.
Odor develops in still spaces. Closets, cabinets under sinks, and unused rooms combine damp air with no air movement, which is the exact recipe.
Fabrics hold moisture longer. Towels stay damp, stored linens smell, and a laundry load left in the machine turns within hours rather than a day.

What happens below 30 percent
Dry is not automatically better. Under about 30 percent, static charge builds, which makes fine dust cling to plastics, screens, and electronics instead of settling where you can wipe it.
Wood shrinks. Floors gap, trim opens at the joints, and furniture joints loosen. Skin, eyes, and nasal passages feel dry, and fine particles stay suspended in still air longer than they would in a moister room.
Winter is when most homes drift low, because cold outdoor air holds very little moisture and heating it drops relative humidity further. That is a real seasonal effect rather than a fault in the heating system.
The tools that actually move the number
In order of how much work they do:
- Exhaust fans, run long enough. The bathroom fan should run through the shower and for a stretch afterward, and the range hood should run whenever you boil or fry. This removes moisture at the source, which beats treating it later.

- Air conditioning in warm, humid weather. Cooling removes moisture as a side effect, which is why a house often feels less muggy the moment the system runs.
- Air movement into dead corners. Closet doors left ajar, furniture pulled a few inches off exterior walls, and a small fan in a still room all reduce the microclimates where growth starts.
- A humidifier in a dry winter house, kept clean. A dirty humidifier puts biological material into the air, which is the opposite of the goal.
- Fixing the water. A leaking supply line, a failed window seal, or a downspout dumping at the foundation will beat every appliance you own.
What humidity control does not do
It reduces conditions. It does not remove what is already there, and it does not treat anyone.

Lowering humidity slows and can stop mold growth, but it does not remove established growth or repair damaged material.
