What pH actually measures
pH measures how acidic or alkaline a water-based solution is. The scale runs from 0 to 14. Seven is neutral, which is roughly where pure water sits. Anything below 7 is acidic. Anything above 7 is alkaline, a word that means the same thing as basic.

What does pH mean on a cleaning product?
On a cleaning product, pH tells you what kind of soil the formula is built to attack. Alkaline products target greasy, oily, and protein soils. Acidic products target mineral deposits, rust, and soap scum. Neutral products clean light soil without changing the surface underneath them.
What alkaline cleaners do
Alkaline cleaners work on soils that are organic and greasy. Degreasers, oven cleaners, all-purpose sprays, laundry detergent, and most floor cleaners live on this side of the scale.
Alkalinity does two useful things to fat. It breaks fats and oils apart into smaller pieces the water can carry away, and in strong form it converts fat into a soap-like substance that rinses. That is why a degreaser cuts through a range hood film that plain water slides right over.
Alkaline chemistry also loosens protein soils -- food residue, body oils, and the general film that builds on a kitchen wall. The stronger the alkalinity, the greasier the soil it can handle, and the more careful you have to be with the surface underneath. What acidic cleaners do
Acids dissolve minerals, which is essentially their whole job in a home.
Limescale, hard water spots on glass, the crust inside a kettle, toilet bowl rings, rust stains, and the mineral half of soap scum are all mineral deposits. Alkaline cleaner does nothing useful against them, and scrubbing harder does not help either. A mild acid dissolves the deposit chemically and the residue wipes away.
Common household acids include vinegar, citric acid, and the phosphoric or sulfamic acids in commercial descalers. The catch is that acids attack more than the deposit you aimed them at.
Where pH damages a surface
Natural stone. Marble, travertine, and limestone are calcium-based. An acid dissolves the stone itself, leaving a dull etched patch that is permanent and cannot be cleaned out. Aluminum and some soft metals. Strong alkaline cleaners corrode and discolor bare aluminum.
Sealed and finished surfaces. Repeated acid exposure degrades the sealer on granite and the finish on polyurethane-coated hardwood. Strong alkalinity can strip floor finish outright.
Wool and silk. Protein fibers are damaged by high alkalinity. They want a neutral to slightly acidic product. Skin and eyes are damaged at both extremes, so gloves are not optional at either end of the scale.
Why matching pH to soil is the whole game
Most cleaning frustration is a pH mismatch, not a lack of effort.
Scrubbing a hard water film with an alkaline all-purpose spray can go on forever, because the spray has no chemistry that touches minerals. Wiping a greasy backsplash with a bathroom acid does about as little. Swap the two products and both jobs finish in a minute.

When both soils sit on the same surface, such as a shower with body oil and mineral scale on the glass, work in two passes. Acid first for the scale, rinse, then a detergent pass for the film.
A neutral cleaner is not weaker in this picture, just narrower. It relies on surfactants and agitation instead of aggressive chemistry, so it removes light and moderate soil without risking the surface, which makes it the right default for stone, sealed hardwood, and any finish you cannot easily replace.
How do you find out the pH of a product?
Check the label, then the safety data sheet, which lists pH in the physical properties section for most water-based products. Inexpensive test strips read a diluted working solution directly. Category is also a strong clue: degreasers and laundry products are alkaline, descalers and bathroom products are acidic.

The safety line you cannot cross
Never mix an acid with chlorine bleach. Bleach plus vinegar, bleach plus a toilet bowl cleaner, or bleach plus a descaler releases chlorine gas, and it happens fast in a small bathroom. Never mix bleach with ammonia either, since many glass cleaners contain it.
