How Do You Know Which Cleaner to Use?

The Three Kinds of Household Soil
Almost everything in a home falls into one of three buckets.

Reading Soil in Real Rooms
The identification gets easier with a few examples.
A stovetop that feels tacky. Grease. Alkaline degreaser, dwell time, then wipe, as in a homemade kitchen degreaser.
Shower glass with cloudy spots that will not wipe off. Mineral. Acid, dwell, agitate, rinse, as in a homemade descaler for hard water buildup.
A grey film in a tub. Soap scum, which is a hybrid: the fatty part responds to alkaline and the mineral part responds to acid. In hard water areas the mineral portion usually dominates, so an acid product often works better.
A toilet ring. Mineral, so acid, and never with a chlorine product in the same bowl.
A dusty baseboard. Particulate. A damp cloth, no chemistry required.
A greasy film on the inside of a range hood. Heavy grease and old grease. Alkaline, generous dwell time, and repeated passes rather than a stronger product.

When One Surface Has Both
A shower is the classic case: body oil, soap residue, and hard water minerals all in the same square foot.
The workable approach is sequential, never combined. Clean with the alkaline product first to remove the greasy layer, rinse thoroughly with plain water, then apply the acid product to the now-exposed mineral deposits, dwell, agitate, and rinse again.
The rinse between the two steps is not optional. Combining an acid with a chlorine bleach product releases chlorine gas, and that pairing is exactly what happens when someone sprays a tub cleaner onto a bleach product that is still sitting there. Doing it in the other order wastes the acid, because it spends itself on the greasy layer instead of the mineral one underneath.
The Surface Overrules the Soil
This is where matching goes wrong even when the soil identification is right.
Natural stone. No acid, ever. Marble, travertine, and limestone are etched permanently by vinegar, lemon juice, citric acid, and acidic bathroom sprays. Hard water spots on a stone shower surround are handled with a pH-neutral stone product, a soft brush, and repetition.
Aluminum. No strong alkali. Washing soda, oven cleaner, and caustic degreasers discolor and corrode it.
Engineered quartz. No bleach, no abrasives, no high heat.
Sealed hardwood and laminate. Neutral only, damp not wet.
Stainless steel. No chlorine bleach, which pits it.

The Four-Question Routine
Before you spray anything, run through this.
What is the soil, greasy or mineral or loose? What is the surface, and does it rule anything out? What is the mildest product that fits both answers? Have I given it dwell time before deciding it does not work?
That fourth question resolves more problems than any product change. Most cleaners need time on the surface to do what they do, and the common failure is spraying and wiping within a few seconds, then reaching for something stronger.
