Sizes for homeowners typically run 12 to 16 inches across, with contractor units going to 20 inches and beyond. Larger is not automatically better, because the disc has to be fed enough water to spin properly.
Why it beats a wand on flat work
Evenness. A wand fan cleans hardest at its center and weakest at its edges, so any variation in overlap, distance, or speed prints onto the concrete as light and dark bands. Speed. Two spinning arms sweep a wide circle continuously. A driveway that takes six hours with a wand often takes one to two with a surface cleaner.

Containment. The shroud keeps the spray and the dirty water under the housing rather than throwing it onto the garage door, the car, and the siding. That alone saves cleanup.
Less water. Because the work happens faster and the passes are efficient, a surface cleaner typically uses less water for the same slab.
Less fatigue. You push it. You are not holding a wand at arm's length for hours, and there is no recoil to fight.
Where a wand still wins
Edges and corners. The housing has a rim, so a surface cleaner cannot reach the last inch against a wall, a garden bed, or an expansion joint. A wand cuts those in before or after.
Steps and vertical faces. Anything that is not flat is wand work.
Spot stains. Concentrated oil or rust areas are usually pre-treated and then addressed with a wand at a controlled distance.
Small areas. For a short walkway or a landing, the setup time is not worth it.
Non-flat textures. A heavily broomed or exposed-aggregate slab may not let the disc ride evenly, and a badly spalling slab should be treated gently or not at all.

Matching one to your machine

Also check pressure rating and the connection type. Most use a standard quick-connect, but hose length and fittings matter, and an oversized disc on an undersized pump is the single most common mismatch.
Using one well
Pre-treat the slab first. Apply a concrete cleaner or degreaser across the whole area and let it dwell, so stained spots release at the same pace as everything else and you are not tempted to linger.
Start the machine with the disc already flat on the concrete. Tipping a spinning surface cleaner puts a bare nozzle stream onto the slab and gouges it.
Walk at a steady pace and overlap each pass by two to four inches. Slower is not better; a consistent pace is.
Work in one direction across the whole slab rather than in patches, and keep the pattern regular so any faint edge lines run parallel instead of crossing.

On pavers, be careful
A surface cleaner will work on pavers, but the same spinning force that cleans concrete evenly also lifts the sand out of the joints.

Never use one on wood, composite decking, stamped or sealed concrete you want to preserve, or anything with a coating on it.
Safety notes
The spray is contained but not eliminated. Wear eye protection, and keep feet and pets clear of the skirt, since the nozzles under there are running at full pressure.
Never lift a running surface cleaner off the ground. Release the trigger first.
And the general rule holds: nothing about a surface cleaner makes ladder work acceptable. It is a ground-level tool for flat surfaces, full stop.
