TL;DR

A whole tray of drinks is a volume problem before it is a stain problem. Extract the liquid first with a wet-dry vacuum, because most of it has already gone through to the pad. Only then identify what actually spilled, because coffee, cola, and red drink mix each need different chemistry and treating them all the same sets at least one.

Why This Is Different From One Spilled Cup

Two reasons. The sheer quantity means the liquid reaches the backing and pad within seconds and spreads sideways well past the visible edge. And a tray usually holds different drinks, so you are dealing with several stain classes in overlapping puddles.

Grabbing a bottle of general-purpose spray and going at all of it is the fastest way to make one of those stains permanent.

Step One: Volume First, Chemistry Later

Nothing you apply matters until the liquid is out. Diluted stain in the pile responds to almost anything; concentrated stain sitting in the backing responds to very little.

Move furniture off the wet area immediately. Wood legs stain wet carpet, metal legs rust-mark it, and cardboard leaves a brown mark that is genuinely hard to remove.

Extract with a wet-dry shop vacuum, slowly, with overlapping passes, going back over the same area several times. Most of the liquid is below the surface and comes up in stages. The technique is in how to use a shop vac to extract carpet.

Or press with thick dry towels, standing on them and replacing as they saturate. Slower, and it removes a lot.

Work from the outside inward, so you are not driving the spill into clean carpet.

Do not rub. Rubbing spreads the mark and roughens the pile permanently.

Step Two: Rinse With Cool Water and Extract Again

Apply plain cool water in stages to dilute what is still in the pile.

Extract immediately, then repeat two or three times.

Cool, not hot. Anything containing milk, cream, or a protein drink is set permanently by heat, and a tray of coffees usually has milk in it somewhere.

This dilute-and-extract cycle does more for a large mixed spill than any spotter, and it is the step most people skip in a hurry.

Step Three: Work Out What Actually Spilled

Now look at what is left. Each class needs different chemistry, and the marks are usually distinguishable by color and location.

Coffee and tea are tannin. Treated on the acid side with a mild acidic spotter or a weak white vinegar solution. Alkaline all-purpose cleaner sets them and darkens them. Detail is in how to remove coffee stains from carpet.

Cola and dark soda are sugar plus caramel color plus acid. A neutral detergent handles them well, and thorough rinsing matters because leftover sugar is sticky and attracts soil.

Red drink mix, sports drink, and fruit punch are acid dye, and on nylon they can bond permanently to the dye sites. This is the hardest thing on the tray. Do not use an oxidizer as a first move, and do not use heat. The approach is in how to get red drink mix out of carpet.

Milk, cream, milkshakes, and protein drinks are protein. Cold water and an enzyme cleaner with a real dwell time. Heat sets them permanently and also produces a sour smell later if residue stays in the pile.

Clear water, sparkling water, and plain juice are mostly a drying problem with a light sugar residue.

Alcohol is usually a dye and sugar problem, with the added note that red wine is tannin plus dye and wants acid-side treatment rather than detergent.

Step Four: Treat, Rinse, and Dry

Treat each mark separately with the right chemistry, applied to a white cloth rather than poured on, blotting from the outside inward and changing to clean cloth constantly.

Rinse each treated area by blotting with plain cool water. Residue left behind attracts dirt and produces a dark spot weeks later.

Blot dry, then dry the area fast with a fan across the surface and ventilation. A dehumidifier makes a real difference. Guidance is in how to speed up carpet drying time.

Weight a folded white towel on each treated spot as it dries, so residual moisture and dissolved sugar draw up into the towel rather than into the pile tips.

Check the pad. Press hard with a folded towel. Water coming up means the pad is saturated and needs its own drying, ideally with a carpet corner folded back and a fan pointed into the gap.

If Marks Reappear Tomorrow

That is wicking, not a failed cleaning. Sugar and dye that soaked into the backing rise back to the surface as the carpet dries, reproducing the marks in the same places.

Re-extract more thoroughly than the first time, treat again, and dry faster. A heavy spill can wick more than once as successive cleanings bring up successive portions. The mechanism and the fixes are in how to stop carpet wicking.

When to Call Someone

A tray-sized spill onto a saturated pad, a red drink mix mark on light nylon carpet, wool or a natural fiber rug, or marks that stop improving after several honest attempts. A professional can extract properly rather than blot, and has a reducing agent for a dye stain that ordinary cleaning cannot touch.

FAQ

What should I do first when several drinks spill on carpet?

Extract the liquid before applying anything. Move furniture off the wet area, then use a wet-dry vacuum in slow overlapping passes, or press with thick dry towels. Most of the liquid has already reached the backing, and chemistry cannot work through a saturated pile.

Can I treat all the drinks with the same cleaner?

No, and this is where most people go wrong. Coffee and tea are tannin and need acid-side treatment, milk and protein drinks need cold water and an enzyme, and red drink mix is an acid dye needing a reducing agent. One product applied to all of them will set at least one.

Why should I not use hot water on a drink spill?

Because anything containing milk, cream, or protein powder is set permanently by heat, exactly the way an egg sets in a pan. A tray of drinks almost always contains something with milk in it, so cool water is the safe default across the whole spill.

What is the hardest drink to get out of carpet?

Red drink mix, fruit punch, and sports drinks, because the coloring is an acid dye that bonds to the dye sites in nylon carpet and behaves like a permanent dye rather than a stain. Heat and oxidizers can make it worse, and it often needs a professional reducing agent.

Why did the stains come back after the carpet dried?

Wicking. Sugar and dye that soaked into the backing travel back up to the pile tips as moisture evaporates, reproducing the marks in the same places. Extract more thoroughly, treat again, and dry faster with a fan and folded towels weighted on the spots.

Do I need to worry about the carpet pad?

If the spill was large, yes. Press a folded towel down hard and see whether liquid comes up. A saturated pad should be dried within 24 to 48 hours, ideally by folding back a carpet corner and pointing a fan into the gap, or it becomes an odor and mold question.
