Why does spraying upward cause damage?
Lap siding, whether vinyl, wood, fiber cement, or engineered, works like roof shingles turned sideways. Each course overlaps the one below it so gravity carries water down the face and away. That overlap is a one-way path.
A pressure washer aimed upward reverses the direction and forces water behind the boards. Once inside, water sits against sheathing and framing in a space with very little airflow, and it can stay there for weeks.

What actually happens behind the wall
Trapped moisture swells sheathing, softens insulation, corrodes fasteners, and eventually rots framing. It also creates conditions for mold growth inside a wall cavity where nobody will see it.
The distinctive sign is a stain or bubbling that appears on interior drywall or trim weeks after an exterior wash, well away from any obvious leak. By then the wash is rarely suspected.
Mold inside a wall and water damage to framing are separate trades from cleaning. Remediation and restoration contractors have the equipment to open, dry, and test an assembly, and that is who a suspected wall-cavity problem belongs to.
How should siding actually be sprayed?
Work from the top of the wall down, holding the wand at roughly a forty-five degree downward angle so water travels with the laps rather than against them. Keep the tip at least a foot or two from the surface with a wide fan, and never aim into a seam, a joint, a light fixture, or a vent.
The reason to work top-down is dirty runoff. Water running over an uncleaned lower section leaves streaks, so cleaning downward keeps the sequence right, and a final bottom-up rinse is done with a hose rather than a pressure wand.
Why high pressure is the wrong tool for siding
Vinyl siding cracks and can be knocked off its nailing hem entirely by a concentrated jet. Wood siding furs and loses paint. Fiber cement is durable but its painted finish is not, and a close jet leaves visible etching.
Painted surfaces older than the mid-1970s raise an additional concern, because paint from that era may contain lead and pressure washing can spread chips and dust across a yard. Testing and following the appropriate work practices matters before disturbing old paint.
The industry answer for house exteriors is soft washing: low pressure, a cleaning solution allowed to dwell, and a thorough rinse. Chemistry removes the growth, and the water only carries it away.
What cleaner is used, and what to avoid
Most exterior cleaning mixes for algae and mildew are dilute sodium hypochlorite with a surfactant, applied at low pressure and rinsed. That is effective and it is also the source of most of the plant damage people complain about afterward.
Wet down every plant, shrub, and lawn area before starting, cover what you can, and rinse everything again afterward. Runoff into a storm drain is worth thinking about as well, and some jurisdictions have rules about it.
Never mix products. Chlorine-based cleaner combined with ammonia, with an acidic masonry or rust product, or with alcohol produces toxic gas, and working outdoors does not make that safe when you are standing in the plume. Which openings must be protected before washing
Everything that is designed to let air in will also let water in. Dryer vents, bathroom and kitchen exhausts, soffit vents, attic vents, and the weep holes at the bottom of vinyl courses are all direct paths.
Exterior outlets, light fixtures, doorbells, cameras, and the electrical service entrance are the safety concern. Cover them, and shut off circuits to exterior fixtures before washing near them.
Windows and doors deserve particular care. Old glazing putty, tired weatherstripping, and worn caulk will not stop a pressure jet, and the water will run down the inside of the wall rather than out.
Why washing a wall that is already leaking is a bad idea
If there is existing damage, failing caulk, cracked siding, missing trim, or a soft spot, washing pushes water directly into the fault.
Walk the whole exterior first and look at the joints, the transitions to trim, the area behind gutters, and the bottom course. Fix what is obviously open before adding water at pressure.

What the green and black growth actually is
Green film on a north-facing wall is algae. Black streaks under a roofline are usually mildew or dirt washed down from the roof. Neither is eating the siding; both are living on moisture and organic film.
They come back wherever the wall stays damp. Trimming vegetation back away from the wall, cleaning gutters so they stop overflowing down the face, and improving sun and airflow does more for the long run than any product.
