What actually ruins a wood deck during cleaning?

Force and chemistry. Wood is not uniform: each growth ring has dense late wood and soft early wood, and a concentrated water jet strips the soft bands away preferentially. The result is a washboard surface with raised fibers.

Once the surface is furred, it holds water and dirt, takes stain unevenly, and splinters underfoot. It cannot be cleaned back smooth; it has to be sanded.

How much pressure is too much for a deck?

Softwood decking generally tolerates roughly 500 to 800 pounds per square inch with a wide fan tip held well back, and hardwood a little more. Most consumer pressure washers deliver two to three thousand pounds per square inch, which will carve visible lines into cedar and pine in seconds. Use the widest tip, keep the wand moving, and stay well back.

The most common mistake is not the pressure setting but the distance and the tip. A zero-degree or narrow tip concentrates all that force on a small area, and a wand held close acts like a chisel.

Test on an inconspicuous board first. If the wand leaves any visible track, back off, widen the tip, or move further away.

Why chlorine bleach is the wrong cleaner for wood

Chlorine bleach does bleach the gray out of weathered wood quickly, which is why it is so widely recommended. The cost is not visible on day one.

It attacks lignin, the natural polymer binding wood fibers, which leaves the surface soft, fuzzy, and prone to further breakdown. It also corrodes metal: deck screws, joist hangers, flashing, and the connectors holding the structure together all suffer, and the damage happens underneath where nobody sees it until a board loosens.

Chlorine additionally kills lawn and border plantings that the runoff reaches, and it can leave wood unable to take a stain evenly.

The industry alternative is a percarbonate or oxygen-based deck cleaner, which brightens without attacking lignin or metal, or a dedicated wood cleaner followed by an oxalic acid brightener to even the color out.

Why letting a cleaner dry on the deck causes streaks

A cleaner that dries on the surface leaves the dissolved soil exactly where it was, in a hard band that then needs more aggressive removal than the original grime did.

Work in shade, or early or late in the day, and keep the surface wet for the whole dwell time. Wetting the deck first also stops the cleaner from soaking into dry wood unevenly.

Never mix deck cleaning products

This is the safety line that matters most on an exterior project, because people often have several products out at once.

Never combine bleach with ammonia, with any acid such as vinegar or a masonry cleaner, or with rubbing alcohol. Those combinations produce toxic gases. Never combine an oxygen cleaner with a chlorine product either. Use one product, rinse completely, then use another if you need to, and work with plenty of ventilation and eye protection.

Why composite decking has its own rules

Composite boards are wood flour bound in plastic, and high pressure damages them differently: it erodes the plastic surface and exposes the wood fiber underneath, which then stains and grows mildew far more easily than the intact board did.

Most composite manufacturers specify a maximum pressure and prohibit certain cleaners, and using the wrong one can void a warranty. Check the manufacturer instructions before touching a composite deck with anything but soap and a brush.

Persistent growth on a deck that never dries is a drainage and shade problem rather than a cleaning problem. Timing, sealing, and the mistakes around them

Sealing or staining a deck that is still damp traps moisture under the finish, which then blisters and peels. Most products call for the wood to dry for at least two or three days after cleaning, longer in cool weather.

Sealing over a furred surface locks in the damage and wastes the product. Sand any raised grain first.
