Two completely different jobs

Every carpet stain falls into one of a few families, and the family decides the chemistry.

An oxygen spotter works by oxidation. It releases active oxygen that breaks the chemical bonds holding a colored molecule together. The stain is not lifted out so much as taken apart until it no longer reflects color. Common forms are hydrogen peroxide solutions and sodium percarbonate powders.

A solvent spotter works by dissolving. Oil, grease, tar, and many inks are not water soluble, so no amount of detergent and rinsing moves them efficiently. A solvent -- citrus terpene, glycol ether, or a petroleum distillate -- puts the stain back into liquid form so a towel can absorb it.

Which stains need an oxygen spotter?

Oxygen spotters belong on color that came from something organic. Coffee, black tea, red wine, fruit juice, drink mix, mustard, and the general brownish cast on older carpet all respond, as does yellowing left behind after urine is cleaned.

They also need time. Most oxygen chemistry works slowly at room temperature -- expect 10 to 60 minutes of dwell, longer for old browning. Rushing it is the usual reason people say it did not work.

Which stains need a solvent spotter?

Solvents belong on anything greasy or sticky. Cooking oil, butter, salad dressing, motor oil, shoe polish, crayon, lipstick, candle wax, ballpoint ink, adhesive residue, chewing gum, and asphalt tar all need a solvent.

There is a fiber wrinkle worth knowing. Olefin, also called polypropylene, and polyester are both oleophilic -- they attract and hold oil while shrugging off water-based stains. On those fibers an oily spot is unusually stubborn and a solvent step is usually not optional. Nylon behaves differently: it resists oil reasonably well but is dye-site sensitive, so acid dyes from food coloring and red drink mix bond to it almost permanently. Can you use an oxygen spotter on wool?

Wool cannot take oxygen bleach. That is not a preference, it is a limit. Wool is a protein fiber, it tolerates a pH range of roughly 5 to 8, and it will not take high heat or oxidizing bleach. An oxygen spotter that harmlessly brightens a nylon carpet can lighten wool permanently, leaving a pale patch that no cleaning will restore.

Silk, and viscose or rayon sold as art silk, are worse. Viscose and rayon lose strength when wet and are effectively ruined by water, let alone by an oxidizer. If a rug feels papery when damp or the fibers look crushed and dull after a spill, stop and get professional advice.

Solvent risks that are easy to underestimate

Solvents are gentler on dye than oxidizers, but they carry their own hazards.

  • Backing damage. Most carpet is held together with latex adhesive, and strong solvents can soften it. Apply solvent to a towel, never directly to the carpet.
  • Ventilation. Many solvents are flammable and give off fumes. Open windows, run a fan, and keep them away from pilot lights. Birds are extremely sensitive to airborne fumes -- move them out of the room entirely.
  • Rings. A solvent spreads the dissolved oil outward. Work from the outside of the spot inward and blot constantly.

Never combine them, or anything else

Do not mix products in one container, and do not layer them without a rinse between. Bleach with ammonia, bleach with any acid such as vinegar, and bleach with alcohol all release hazardous gas. Hydrogen peroxide with vinegar makes a corrosive acid. Solvent plus an oxidizer is unpredictable and can be flammable.

If the first product does not work, flush the area with clean cool water, blot it dry with white towels, and let it dry before trying anything else.

How do you test a spotter safely?

Do this every time, with both types. Find a hidden area -- inside a closet, under a couch, or an installation scrap. Apply the product to a folded white cotton towel rather than to the carpet, press the towel into the hidden carpet for 30 seconds, and lift. Any carpet color on the towel means the dye is unstable, so stop. Then let the test area dry fully and check for lightening, stiffness, or a texture change.

Work the real spot from the outside in, blotting rather than scrubbing. Scrubbing untwists yarn and creates a permanently fuzzy patch. Rinse with clean cool water at the end and blot dry, because leftover product attracts soil.

The verdict, with conditions

Keep both if you own synthetic carpet. They cover different halves of the stain universe, and one bottle cannot substitute for the other. Reach for oxygen on colored organic stains, solvent on anything oily or sticky.

Keep only a wool-safe neutral spotter and a mild solvent if your carpet or rug is wool, silk, viscose, or unidentified. The oxygen product is the one that causes irreversible damage on those fibers, and there is no version of it that is worth the risk on a rug you care about.
