TL;DR
Jute, sisal, seagrass, coir, and viscose all absorb water into the fiber itself, swell, and then contract unevenly as they dry, which pulls a rug out of square permanently. Wool shrinks by felting rather than by contraction. On a natural fiber rug, dry methods are the default and wet cleaning is a decision, not a routine.
Why Natural Fibers Move and Synthetics Do Not
Nylon, polyester, and olefin are extruded plastic. Water sits around them but does not enter the fiber, so a synthetic rug can be soaked, extracted, and dried without changing size.
Plant and animal fibers are hygroscopic: they take water into the fiber structure. The fiber swells, the yarn swells, the weave tightens, and the whole textile changes dimensions.
The problem is not the swelling but what happens next. The rug dries unevenly, from the edges inward and the top down, so different parts contract at different rates and the weave locks into whatever shape it reaches first. The result is a rug that is smaller, out of square, wavy at the edges, or all three. That is not something a cleaner did wrong. It is what the material does.
Fiber by Fiber
Jute. The most water-sensitive of the common rug fibers. Jute is high in lignin, the woody compound that stiffens plant stems, and wet lignin releases tannins that migrate to the surface as brown staining. The fiber also weakens dramatically when saturated, and jute rugs commonly have a backing that shrinks at a different rate than the face. Detail in what water does to jute.
Sisal. Strong and durable dry, dimensionally unstable wet. It absorbs quickly, swells, buckles as it dries, and browns readily. Sisal is the fiber most often ruined by a well-intentioned spot cleaning with too much water. Method in cleaning a sisal rug.
Seagrass and coir. Less absorbent because they carry natural waxes, but they still swell and brown.
Viscose, rayon, bamboo silk, art silk. Viscose is regenerated cellulose and loses a large share of its strength when wet. Wool. A different mechanism. Wool fibers have overlapping surface scales, and heat, moisture, alkalinity, and agitation together make those scales interlock and ratchet closer, which is felting and does not come apart. Wool can be wet cleaned safely with cool to lukewarm water, a pH in roughly the 5 to 8 range, minimal agitation, and no oxygen bleach. Guidance in cleaning wool carpet safely.
Cotton. Cotton foundations and fringe shrink, and a cotton foundation contracting under a wool face is a classic cause of a rug going out of square.
The Warning Signs You Already Have a Problem
If a natural fiber rug has already been wetted, look for edges lifting or waving, corners curling upward or pulling inward, a visible size change against the furniture layout the rug used to fit, brown or amber discoloration at the perimeter of a damp area, a stiff rough matted patch with a hard border, or a crunchy feel when you flex the rug. The discoloration is tannin migration rather than soil, and the matted patch on viscose is permanent.
What Actually Works Instead
Dry methods are the default on these rugs, and they work better than people expect.
Vacuum thoroughly and often. Suction only, no beater bar, on both sides. Flipping the rug and vacuuming the back drives embedded grit down and out, which matters because grit is what cuts these fibers.
Dry compound cleaning. A slightly damp absorbent powder is worked into the fiber, left to attract soil, and vacuumed out. Almost no free water reaches the rug, and it is the standard approach for sisal and seagrass.
Blot spills immediately, do not flood them. Press with a dry white cloth, work from the outside of the spill inward, and change to a clean part of the cloth constantly.
Dry solvent spotting, sparingly. A dry cleaning solvent on a white cloth handles many spots without water. Test in a hidden corner first, ventilate, and keep it away from open flame.
Accept some permanence. Natural fiber rugs are meant to age, and the alternative for a badly stained one is often replacement rather than a risky wet cleaning.
When Wet Cleaning Is Justified
Sometimes the rug has to be wet cleaned, usually pet urine or a large organic spill where the alternative is disposal. If so, this belongs in a rug cleaning plant, not on your living room floor and not with a rental machine. A plant tests the dyes for bleeding before any water touches the rug, controls water temperature and pH to what the fiber tolerates, extracts far more thoroughly than a portable machine, and dries the rug flat under controlled airflow so it dries evenly rather than edge-first. Most importantly, it blocks the rug back to square while it dries, which is the step that actually prevents distortion.

If It Already Shrank
Options are limited but not zero.
Block it while damp. A rug still damp can sometimes be pulled back toward square and pinned or weighted at the edges while it dries flat. This works within hours, not days, and it is a partial recovery at best.
Re-bind the edges. A rug that has gone wavy at the perimeter can sometimes be re-serged by a rug workroom, which tensions the edge and holds the shape.
Hold it flat. Furniture legs on the corners and a good gripper pad both resist curling and reduce trip risk.
Accept replacement. For viscose especially, once the fiber is matted and yellowed the rug is finished, and further attempts make it worse.
