- White vinegar, diluted one part to four parts water, applied and left thirty minutes. Acid helps break down mineral and aluminum residue. Use this on whites and colorfast fabrics, and never in combination with any bleach product.
Use one of these at a time, not several mixed together.
Step three: soak. Submerge the shirt in warm water with an enzyme detergent or an oxygen bleach solution for thirty minutes to several hours. Oxygen bleach is safe on most cottons and synthetics and is the better choice for yellowing on whites. It is not safe on wool or silk.

For stubborn, long-set stains
Some shirts need a longer intervention. An overnight soak in an oxygen bleach solution, followed by an enzyme detergent wash, clears most of what a single round leaves behind. Repeat over two or three washes rather than escalating to something harsher.
Chlorine bleach is the wrong tool here, and it is a common mistake. Chlorine reacts with the proteins in sweat residue and can turn a light yellow area distinctly darker yellow.
