What temperature actually changes

Three things, and it helps to keep them separate.

Chemical reaction speed. Warmer water speeds up the reactions that dissolve and lift soil. Traditional detergents needed that heat. Modern enzyme detergents do not, because enzymes are biological catalysts selected to work in the cold.

Solubility and melting. Oils and waxes soften and dissolve as temperature rises. This is why greasy soil is the one category that genuinely benefits from heat.

Fiber and dye behavior. Heat relaxes fibers, which allows cotton to shrink and dye to migrate out of the fabric. It also sets protein stains permanently.

What water temperature should I use for laundry?

Cold for most loads, including colors, darks, everyday clothing and anything with unstable dye. Warm for moderately soiled cottons, whites, towels and bedding. Hot for greasy work clothes, oily kitchen linens, and items that need sanitizing, on fabrics that tolerate it.

Cold water: the default

Cold is generally somewhere around 60 to 80 degrees F, depending on your incoming supply and the season.

Use it for: colors and darks, delicates, wool and silk that are hand-washable, activewear, anything you are worried about shrinking, lightly soiled everyday clothing, and any protein stain.

Why it works: enzyme detergents contain proteases, amylases and lipases that break protein, starch and fat into pieces small enough for surfactants to carry away, and they are formulated to be active at low temperature. Why cold water cleans most loads covers the detail.

The protein stain rule is absolute. Blood, sweat, egg, milk, and other protein soils must be washed in cold. Heat cooks the protein and bonds it to the fiber permanently. Once a blood stain has been through a warm wash or a dryer, it is usually there for good.

Cold water needs help in two places. Powder detergent can fail to dissolve fully in very cold water -- dissolve it in warm water first, or use liquid. And a pod film may not fully dissolve in a very cold wash.

Warm water: the middle ground

Warm is roughly 90 to 110 degrees F.

Use it for: whites and light colors with moderate soil, towels, bedding, cloth napkins, synthetic blends, and cotton work clothes that are dirty but not greasy.

Warm is a reasonable compromise for loads where cold leaves you slightly unsatisfied and hot would be excessive. It improves detergent solubility and lifts body oils better than cold without the shrinkage risk of hot.

Hot water: the specialist tool

Hot is generally 120 degrees F and above, limited by your water heater setting.

Use it for:

  • Greasy and oily work clothes, kitchen rags and mechanic's clothing.
  • White cotton towels and bedding that need sanitizing.
  • Cloth diapers, per the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Bedding when someone in the house has been sick, or when addressing dust mites in bedding.

What hot costs you: cotton shrinkage, faster dye fading and color bleeding, damage to elastic and spandex, felting on wool, and significant energy use.
