How to Identify Your Carpet Fiber at Home in Ten Minutes.

Identify carpet fiber at home with paperwork, a feel test, a float test, and a safe burn test. Know if you have wool, nylon, polyester, or olefin.

Why the fiber decides everything

Fiber is not a detail. It sets the water temperature you can use, the pH range that is safe, whether oxygen bleach is allowed, how fast the carpet dries, which stains are permanent, and whether the carpet will crush in a traffic lane.

Wool cannot take high heat, high alkalinity, or oxygen bleach and wants a pH roughly between 5 and 8. Olefin attracts oil and shrugs off water-based spills. Nylon is dye-site sensitive, so an acid dye like red drink mix can bond permanently. Polyester loves oil and crushes under traffic. Using the wrong approach on the wrong fiber is how carpets get ruined during cleaning rather than before it.

Start with paperwork, not tests

Look here first, in this order:

  1. The installation invoice or the builder's finish schedule. Fiber is usually printed on it.
  2. The warranty card or mill literature in the kitchen drawer, closet shelf, or move-in packet.
  3. The back of a leftover roll or a scrap in the garage. Mills print fiber content on the backing.
  4. A carpet edge under a floor register or a transition strip, where a printed backing can sometimes be seen.
  5. The property manager or builder, if the home is newer. They have the spec sheet.

How can you tell carpet fiber by feel?

Wool feels slightly springy and warm, with a faint lanolin softness and visible variation in the yarn. Nylon feels smooth and resilient and springs back when you press it. Polyester feels silky and slightly slick. Olefin feels waxy and slightly plastic. Triexta feels soft like polyester but recovers better.

The recovery test is the useful half of that. Press your thumb hard into the pile for ten seconds and let go. Nylon and wool rebound quickly and almost fully. Polyester and olefin stay dented longer. In a traffic lane, nylon holds its texture longest, which is why it dominates rental and high-wear specification.

The water tests

The float test. Pull three or four strands from a hidden edge, drop them in a glass of water, and push them under with a spoon. Olefin and polypropylene float, because their density is lower than water. Nylon, polyester, and wool sink. This single test separates olefin from everything else and takes a minute.

The water drop test. Put a drop of plain water on a hidden patch and watch. On olefin it tends to bead and sit. On nylon and wool it soaks in fairly quickly. Wool absorbs the most water of the group and takes the longest to dry, which is exactly why wool jobs are run with less moisture.

Neither test is conclusive on its own, but together they narrow the field fast.

The burn test, done safely

The burn test is the most reliable home method and the one that needs the most care. Take a small pinch of fiber -- ten strands is plenty -- from a closet edge or a leftover scrap. Never cut a tuft out of open floor.

Do it outdoors or over a sink, on a metal or ceramic dish, with a bowl of water beside you. Hold the strands with metal tweezers, touch a flame to the tip, and watch the flame, smell the smoke, and feel the residue once it is cool.

Crushable ash means a natural fiber. A hard bead means a synthetic. That distinction alone routes you into the right cleaning approach.

What to do once you know

  • Wool. Neutral to slightly acidic products only, moderate temperature, no oxygen bleach, low moisture, and fast drying. Start with cleaning wool carpet.
  • Nylon. Handles hot water extraction well and holds up to a proper rinse. Watch acid dye stains, which need a reducing agent, not more soap.

Blends behave like their most sensitive component. A wool-nylon blend is cleaned as wool, and a natural-backed carpet is dried like a natural fiber regardless of what the face yarn is. When in doubt, treat the carpet as the fussier of the two.
