How to clean a sprinkler head and a clogged hose nozzle: flush the line, pull and descale the screen, clear the nozzle ports, and stop it happening again.

Where the clog actually is

Water carries three things that clog irrigation gear: sediment from the line, mineral scale from hard water, and organic growth like algae or biofilm.

Sediment collects at the filter screen. Most nozzles and many sprinkler heads have one, and it is the first thing to check.

Scale builds on the ports themselves, where water evaporates and leaves minerals behind. That is why the outermost surfaces crust first.

Algae and biofilm show up in hoses and heads that sit full of warm water in the sun. They look like green or brown slime.

Start by flushing the hose

Disconnect the nozzle and run the hose wide open for thirty seconds into a bucket or a bed. That pushes sediment out of the line rather than into the nozzle you just cleaned.

Look at what comes out. Grit and rust flakes mean the problem is upstream, possibly in an old galvanized supply line or a sediment-heavy well.

Check the small rubber washer at the hose end while it is apart. A swollen or missing washer causes leaks that get blamed on the nozzle.

If the hose itself is kinked or collapsed inside, no amount of nozzle cleaning will restore the flow. Hoses do fail internally.

How do you clean a clogged hose nozzle?

Unscrew the nozzle, remove the filter screen behind the inlet, and rinse or brush the debris out of it. Soak the whole nozzle in a fifty-fifty mix of white vinegar and warm water for twenty to thirty minutes to dissolve mineral scale, brush the ports with an old toothbrush, then rinse and reassemble.

The screen is the part people never look for. It is a small mesh disc pressed into the inlet, and it can usually be popped out with a small screwdriver or a bent paperclip.

Vinegar is a mild acid and dissolves the calcium and magnesium scale that hard water leaves. Longer soaks work better than stronger solutions.

Never mix vinegar with bleach or with any chlorine-containing cleaner. Acid plus bleach produces chlorine gas, and that is a genuine emergency.

Clearing sprinkler heads

Turn the water off at the valve before pulling a head. On an in-ground system, that is the zone valve or the main.

Pop-up spray heads unscrew from the riser. Take the whole head out, rinse the body, and pull the small filter basket from the bottom of the nozzle.

Rinse the basket under running water and brush it. This alone fixes a large share of weak or crooked spray patterns.

Soak the nozzle in vinegar solution if there is visible scale, then brush the slot or port and rinse.

Rotor heads have a different filter arrangement and often a screen in the base. The manual for the head names the parts, and most manufacturers publish them.

Never widen a port

The size and shape of a nozzle port controls the spray pattern, the droplet size, and the flow rate. All three are engineered.

Poking a nail, a drill bit, or a paperclip through a port enlarges it. The head will spray farther in one direction, less evenly, and will throw off the balance of the whole zone.

Use a soft brush, a wooden toothpick, or a purpose-made nozzle cleaning tool instead. If it will not clear, replace the nozzle, which is a low-cost part.

The same rule applies to hose nozzles, misters, and drip emitters. Emitters in particular are calibrated, and a widened one floods a plant while starving the rest of the line.

Reassembly and testing

Put the screen back before you reassemble. A nozzle running without its filter clogs again quickly and can pass grit into the internals.

Check O-rings and washers for cracks or flattening. These are inexpensive and are the usual cause of a leak at the collar.

A little silicone-based lubricant on the threads and O-rings helps, and it does not degrade rubber the way petroleum grease does.

Turn the water on slowly and watch the pattern. Adjust the arc and radius on a sprinkler head only after it is clean, since a clogged head cannot be aimed accurately.

Preventing the next clog

Drain hoses and store them coiled rather than leaving them pressurized and full in the sun. Standing warm water is what grows biofilm.

Install an inline filter at the spigot if your water carries sediment. They cost little and they catch what would otherwise reach every nozzle.

For hard water, plan on a vinegar soak once or twice a season rather than waiting for a failure. It is a fifteen-minute job when it is routine.

Winterize before the first freeze: drain hoses, disconnect them from the spigot, and blow out or drain in-ground lines per your system. Water left in a nozzle or a head expands when it freezes and cracks the housing.
