Why soil on a blade matters
Soil holds moisture against steel, and that is the whole mechanism behind a rusted shovel. Dry steel in a dry shed does not rust.
Clay is worse than sand. It packs, it holds water for days, and it dries into a crust that traps more moisture underneath.
Soil also carries fertilizer salts and, in some soils, enough acidity to speed corrosion. That is why a shovel used in a garden bed rusts faster than one used in a gravel driveway.
A clean blade also cuts better. Caked soil on the back of a spade adds drag on every push.
Knock the bulk off first
Bang the blade against a hard surface such as a concrete pad or a rock. Most of the soil falls off in one or two hits.
Scrape the rest with a putty knife, a paint scraper, or the edge of another tool. Get the back of the blade, which is the part people skip.
Do this while the soil is still damp. Once it dries into a crust, it takes real work.
Do not bang a fiberglass handle or a wooden handle against concrete. Hit the steel, not the handle.
Wire brush the blade
A stiff wire brush takes off what scraping leaves behind, including the thin film of soil that turns into rust.
Work the whole blade, both faces, and the shoulder where the blade meets the socket. That socket seam is where rust starts on almost every shovel.

Wear eye protection. Wire wheels and even hand brushes throw wire and rust particles.
Should you rinse garden tools with a hose?
Rinsing with a hose is fine and often the fastest way to clear soil, as long as you dry the tool immediately afterward. A rinsed shovel left leaning against a wall to air dry is how most garden tools rust. Rinse, then towel the blade, then oil it before storage.
The rinse is not the problem. The unattended drying is.
Skip the pressure washer on wooden handles. High pressure raises the grain and drives water into the wood.
If the tool has a lot of dried-on clay, a soak in a tub for ten minutes softens it and makes the brushing much easier. Then dry it properly.
Dry, then oil
Towel the blade dry and let it sit in a warm dry spot for a few minutes if you have time.
Then wipe the blade with an oiled rag. Any light machine oil works, and a used motor oil is not the right choice because it carries contaminants.
Wipe the excess off so it does not transfer onto everything else in the shed.
For a longer-term coat, paste wax on the blade works well and does not attract dust the way oil does.
The oiled sand bucket
Fill a five-gallon bucket with clean coarse sand and mix in about a quart of light mineral oil or a similar non-detergent oil until the sand is just damp with it.
After each use, plunge the blade in and out a few times. The sand scours off the soil and the oil leaves a protective film in one motion.
Keep it by the shed door so it is on the way in. The convenience is the entire point.
Top up the oil once or twice a season. Replace the sand when it becomes more soil than sand.
Use the same bucket for trowels, hand forks, hoes, and cultivators. It works on anything with a steel digging surface.
Wooden and fiberglass handles
Wipe wooden handles clean and check for splinters, cracks, and looseness at the socket. A cracked handle on a digging tool fails under load, which is a real injury risk.
Sand a rough handle lightly and wipe it with boiled linseed oil once or twice a season. That keeps the wood from drying out and splintering.
Rags used with boiled linseed oil can heat up on their own and ignite if they are wadded up. Spread them flat outdoors until stiff, or seal them in a metal container with a lid.
Fiberglass handles just need a wipe. Check them for cracks and fraying, since a damaged fiberglass handle can splinter into skin.
The wheelbarrow
Hose the tray out after every load of soil, mulch, or concrete. Concrete especially, since it cures rather than dries and will not come out later.
Scrape any cured material with a putty knife. Cement bonds poorly to smooth steel and often flakes off in sheets.
Dry the tray, then check the underside where rust starts. A wire brush and touch-up paint on bare spots doubles the tray's life.
Store it tipped on its nose or upside down so water cannot collect in the tray. A wheelbarrow left flat outdoors becomes a pond and then a rust pit.
Grease the wheel bearing and check tire pressure once a season. A flat wheelbarrow tire is the most common reason one stops getting used.
