What Gives You the Most Visual Improvement Per Minute?
Vacuuming and grooming, by a wide margin. Most of what makes carpet look tired is dry particulate soil plus pile lying in inconsistent directions, and both come out with a vacuum and a rake in under an hour with zero drying time.
Vacuum slowly in a cross-hatch pattern, three or four passes over the visible areas. Suction removes soil on dwell time rather than on travel speed, so a fast pass leaves most of it behind.
Then rake the pile with a carpet rake, finishing every room in one consistent direction. Uniform nap direction reflects light evenly, which is exactly what your eye reads as clean. It is the same reason a mowed lawn looks good. Technique in grooming does most of the visual work.
Do this even if you also plan to clean. It is the highest return per unit of effort available.
The Traffic Lane Shortcut
If you have six to eight hours and want real cleaning, do the lanes and skip the rest.

Spot Treatment, Carefully
Handle visible spots individually rather than cleaning a whole room for three marks.
Test any product in a hidden area first and check a white towel for dye transfer. Apply lightly, let it dwell a few minutes, and blot with a clean white towel. Press straight down and lift straight up. Never rub, because rubbing frays the yarn tips and leaves a permanent dull patch.
Then rinse with plain water and blot dry, because a spotter left in the fiber becomes a sticky soil magnet within days.
One warning specific to the day of an event: a spot treated in the morning can reappear by evening. Soil in the backing travels up with the moisture as the pile dries, which is called wicking. If you must treat something last minute, get it as dry as possible with towels and a fan and lay a dry towel weighted with a book over it for an hour.
Skip deodorizing powders entirely on the day of. They need thorough vacuuming to come out and there is never enough time, so you end up with grit at the base of the yarn.

Set air movers or box fans at a low angle along the walls, all pointed the same direction so the room air circulates as one loop rather than colliding. Open two windows on opposite sides if the outdoor air is dry, or close the room and run a dehumidifier if it is damp.

Set the Room Up to Stay Clean
