First Pass: Get the Solids Off
Before anything wet touches the floor, walk the room and remove everything sitting on top of the carpet.
Use the edge of a spoon or a dull knife to lift food off the surface. Scoop upward and away. Never press down on solid material, because pressing embeds it in the yarn and turns a five-minute job into a spot treatment.
Broken glass needs care. Pick up the large pieces by hand with a towel, vacuum the area thoroughly, then press packing tape or a lint roller over the carpet to catch the fragments a vacuum leaves behind. Do this before anyone walks the room barefoot.
Then vacuum the whole floor, slowly, in a couple of directions. This is not optional groundwork. A room full of crushed chips and crumbs will turn to paste the moment you introduce liquid.
Second Pass: Treat Spots by Type
Different spills need genuinely different chemistry, and using the wrong one can set the stain permanently. Test any product in a hidden area first and check a white towel for dye transfer.
Red wine. Blot up everything you can with dry white towels first. Use cool water and a wine or tannin spotter, applied lightly and blotted repeatedly. Avoid heat, which can set it. Hydrogen peroxide is sometimes used on light-colored synthetic carpet but it can lighten dyes, so test it and never use it on wool, which cannot take oxygen bleach.
Beer, soda, juice, and cocktails. These are mostly sugar, and sugar is the real problem. Even when the color comes out, sticky sugar residue stays in the fiber and collects soil, so the spot goes dark again within a couple of weeks. Rinse with plain water and blot repeatedly until the pile no longer feels tacky.
Coffee and tea. Tannin stains. Blot, then use a tannin-specific spotter with cool water. General purpose alkaline cleaners can actually set tannin, so reach for the right product rather than the nearest one.
Grease and food oil. Blot, then use a solvent-based spotter applied to a towel rather than directly to the carpet. Olefin and polyester carpet attract oily soil by nature, so these spots hold on harder than they look like they should.
Candle wax. Harden it with ice, then chip the bulk off with a dull edge. For the residue, place a piece of brown paper over the spot and apply low heat from an iron held on the paper, never on the carpet. Synthetic fiber melts and glazes instantly on contact with a hot plate, and that damage is permanent. A dry solvent spotter is the lower-risk option.
Vomit and other protein spills. Cold water only, always. Protein sets permanently with heat, so warm water and steam are the wrong tools. Scoop, blot with cold water, then use an enzyme product designed to break down protein and give it the dwell time on the label.
Cigarette burns. Not a stain. The fiber is melted or charred and cleaning does nothing. Snip the darkened tips carefully with small scissors for a light burn, or have a patch done for a deeper one.
Throughout all of it, press and lift, never rub. Rubbing wet pile frays the yarn tips into a permanent dull patch and spreads the spill sideways at the same time.
Third Pass: Clean the Whole Room
Once the spots are handled and dry, clean the floor as a whole. Doing it in the other order pushes spot material outward into clean carpet.
The traffic path from the door through the main room took the most abuse, and it will need preconditioning, dwell time, and agitation rather than a single pass. Detail in the traffic lane will need its own attention.

Whatever method you use, rinse. Party spills leave sugars and food residue that a single cleaning pass suspends but does not remove, and residue left behind means the room looks dirty again quickly. Rinse matters more than soap.
Watch for Spots That Come Back
A spot that looks perfect on Sunday afternoon and reappears on Monday morning has not been re-stained. Material that soaked into the backing is traveling back up through the pile as the carpet dries, carried by the moisture.
That is wicking, and it is extremely common after a party because drinks go in with volume. The fix is drying fast and, if needed, retreating and then weighting a dry white towel over the area for an hour so the moisture wicks into the towel instead of to the surface. Full approach in a spot that reappears is wicking.
Do not respond to a reappeared spot by scrubbing it. That adds pile damage to a problem that is about moisture movement.
Deal With Odor at the Source
Ventilate the house first. Open windows on opposite sides for cross ventilation and run the HVAC fan continuously.
Then find the source rather than covering it. Odor in carpet comes from something that is still in the carpet, and fragrance sprays only add a second smell on top of the first. Check under and behind furniture for a spill nobody reported, and press a white towel firmly into any suspicious area to see what comes up.
If a large volume of liquid went down, check whether it reached the padding. Liquid that soaked through will keep producing odor until it is extracted, and no amount of surface cleaning reaches it.
Deodorizing powders are a poor tool here. They need very thorough vacuuming to remove, and what stays behind sits at the base of the yarn collecting soil.
Dry It Properly
You have just put water into a carpet that also has sugar and food residue in it, so slow drying invites both odor and wicking.
Set fans at a low angle along the walls, all turning the same direction. Open the room to cross ventilation if the outdoor air is drier than indoors, or close it and run a dehumidifier if it is not. Keep traffic off until the base of the yarn feels dry and room temperature.
Expect six to twelve hours after extraction, and longer in damp weather.
