How to Clean an Immersion Blender Without Cutting Yourself.

How to clean an immersion blender: unplug it, detach the shaft, never reach into the blade guard, and keep the motor handle above the immersion line.

TL;DR

Unplug an immersion blender before anything else, because the trigger is under your hand the entire time you clean it. Detach the blending shaft if it comes off, wash it under running water, and never reach fingers into the blade guard. The motor handle is wiped only, never submerged.

The Trigger Is the Real Hazard

A countertop blender needs a jar locked in place before it will run. An immersion blender does not. Its blade is exposed inside a bell-shaped guard, and the power button sits exactly where your hand grips the housing during cleaning.

That is why unplugging is not a formality here. Nearly every immersion blender injury is a hand in the guard while a thumb rests on the trigger.

How Do You Clean an Immersion Blender?

Unplug it, twist the blending shaft off the motor housing if your model detaches, and rinse the shaft under hot running water blade-side down. Wash it with dish soap using a long-handled brush, rinse, and stand it upright to drain. Wipe the motor housing with a damp cloth and dry it.

Cleaning right after use is the whole game. Purees and dairy set inside the blade guard within minutes and get much harder to move once dry.

The general rule about powered housings that this shares with other small machines is covered in the guide to cleaning small kitchen appliances safely.

The Quick Method for Between Batches

Fill a tall container with a few inches of warm water and a drop of dish soap. Plug the blender in, submerge the shaft to the normal working depth, and pulse it for ten to fifteen seconds. Unplug it, then rinse the shaft under running water and dry it.

This works well between batches of the same recipe and is a poor substitute for a real wash at the end. It never gets the top rim of the guard or the shaft seam properly clean.

Do this only in a container tall enough that the water stays well below the housing. That is the point where the quick method becomes a repair bill.

Where Is the Immersion Line?

Most immersion blenders mark a maximum depth, or the manual states one. If neither exists, the safe assumption is the seam where the metal or plastic shaft meets the motor housing. Water above that seam runs into the motor and the switch.

Some detachable shafts are fully washable and even dishwasher safe once removed. Even then, the motor housing never is. If your model has a fixed shaft, the safe depth rule matters more, since you cannot separate the two.

Never run water over the housing, never hold it under a tap, and never spray it. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately.

Cleaning Inside the Blade Guard

Use a long-handled dish brush or a bottle brush pushed into the guard from below. Rotate the brush rather than your hand. If something is wedged against the blade, use tongs or a chopstick to free it, never fingers.

Dried food on the underside of the blade is common because that surface faces down while the shaft drains. Turn the shaft over and check it in the light before putting it away.

For strongly colored purees such as tomato or turmeric, staining on plastic guards is normal and cosmetic. A baking soda paste fades it. Bleach does not belong here and should never be used on a stainless shaft, since chloride pits stainless steel.

The Attachments That Come With It

Whisk attachments, chopper bowls, and mini blade assemblies each attach through a gearbox or collar that also holds a motor coupling. Wash only the parts the manual lists as washable, and treat every gearbox as a powered part even though it is not electrical.

Chopper bowl lids in particular hide residue around the drive shaft opening. Wash them separately and dry them fully. Source: appliance manufacturer use and care manuals

A countertop blender hides its residue under a gasket instead, which is why how to clean a blender gasket and blade base focuses on disassembling the jar.

A food processor has the widest set of crevices, covered in how to clean a food processor bowl and lid, and a blade grinder is the extreme case of a motor and bowl fused together, covered in how to clean a blade coffee grinder.

When the kitchen around all of them needs more than a wipe, scheduled house cleaning services handle the counters, cabinets, and floors.

FAQ

How do you clean an immersion blender safely?

Unplug it first, then detach the blending shaft if your model allows and wash it under hot running water with dish soap and a long-handled brush. Never put fingers inside the blade guard. Wipe the motor housing with a damp cloth and dry it, and never submerge it.

Can you put an immersion blender shaft in the dishwasher?

Many detachable shafts are dishwasher safe on the top rack, but check the manual, since some have a bearing that dislikes dishwasher heat. The motor housing is never dishwasher safe under any circumstances, and a fixed-shaft model should be hand cleaned entirely.

How far can you submerge a hand blender?

Only to the marked maximum depth, or if there is no mark, up to the seam where the shaft meets the motor housing. Water above that line reaches the motor and switch. Use a container tall enough that the water level stays comfortably below the seam.

How do I get dried food out of the blade guard?

Soak the detached shaft in hot soapy water for ten minutes, then work a long-handled bottle brush up into the guard and rotate it. Use tongs or a chopstick for anything wedged against the blade. Never reach in with fingers, even after unplugging the unit.

Why is my immersion blender staining orange?

Strongly pigmented foods such as tomato, carrot, and turmeric stain plastic guards, and the discoloration is cosmetic rather than residue. A baking soda paste fades it over a few applications. Avoid bleach entirely, and never use it on a stainless shaft, which chloride pits.

Can I clean an immersion blender by running it in soapy water?

Yes as a quick pass between batches. Use a tall container with a few inches of warm soapy water, pulse for ten to fifteen seconds, then unplug and rinse. It does not reach the guard rim or the shaft seam, so do a proper wash at the end.

How should I store an immersion blender?

Store the shaft separated from the motor housing if it detaches, and store both dry. Standing the shaft blade-up in a drawer is a hand hazard, so use a guard, a sleeve, or a dedicated slot. Keep the cord loosely coiled rather than wrapped tightly.
