How to Clean a Blade Coffee Grinder and Clear Spice Odors.

How to clean a spice grinder or blade coffee grinder: unplug it, wipe the bowl only, grind rice or bread to clear odors, and never submerge the motor housing.

TL;DR

A blade grinder has one hard rule: the motor housing and the blade are one sealed unit on most models, so it never goes in water. Unplug it, wipe the bowl with a dry brush and a barely damp cloth, and clear stubborn spice odor by grinding a small amount of plain white rice or stale bread, then discarding it.

The Bowl and the Motor Are the Same Part

On a classic blade grinder, the stainless bowl is molded into the top of the motor housing. There is no seal between them that can survive being submerged. Water poured into the bowl runs straight down the shaft into the motor bearing, where it causes rust and eventually a seized or shorted unit.

That is the difference from a blender, where the jar lifts off a separate base. A blade grinder looks washable and is not.

A few newer models have a removable stainless bowl or a detachable grinding cup. Those cups are washable. The housing under them still is not. The wider rule about powered bases is covered in the guide to cleaning small kitchen appliances safely.

How Do You Clean a Blade Grinder Safely?

Unplug it, tip out the loose grounds, and brush the bowl and blade with a dry pastry brush. Wipe the inside with a cloth barely dampened in warm soapy water, then immediately go over it with a clean damp cloth and a dry one. Leave the lid off until the bowl is completely dry.

Keep the cloth damp rather than wet. If you can wring water out of it, it is too wet for a grinder bowl.

Wash the lid separately in the sink. Lids are usually plain plastic with no electrical parts, and they hold as much residue as the bowl does.

Clearing Spice Odors Without Chemicals

Grind about a quarter cup of plain white rice, or a slice of stale bread torn into pieces, until it is a fine powder. The abrasive dry material scours the bowl and blade and absorbs the volatile oils that carry the smell. Dump it out, brush the bowl, and wipe it dry.

Baking soda works as a follow-up for stubborn odors. Grind a tablespoon, let it sit for a few minutes, then dump and brush. Do not add water to make a paste inside the bowl.

Note that rice is fine in a blade grinder and a poor idea in a burr grinder, where it can chip the burrs. The two machines have opposite rules on this point, which is one reason how to clean a burr coffee grinder is worth reading separately if you own both.

Why Cumin Still Smells After Three Cleanings

Some spice oils are extremely persistent. Cumin, curry blends, fenugreek, and dried chili all leave aromatic compounds that bind to the microscopic scratches in the bowl and to any plastic in the lid. Repeated rice grinds fade them, but they may never disappear entirely.

The practical answer most cooks land on is two grinders: one for coffee and one for spices, clearly marked. Cheap blade grinders make that easy, and it removes the problem instead of managing it.

Cleaning the Blade Without Cutting Yourself

Blade grinder blades are not as sharp as a knife, but they are sharp enough to cut a fingertip pressed against the edge. Unplug the unit before reaching in, brush rather than wipe with a bare finger, and hold the housing steady rather than the blade.

Never try to remove the blade unless the manual describes how. On most units the blade is pressed onto the motor shaft and removing it damages the fit.

Caring for the Housing and Cord

Wipe the outside with a damp cloth and dry it. On a stainless housing, wipe with the grain and keep chloride bleach away, because chloride pits stainless steel. On a printed control panel, avoid ammonia-based cleaner and rubbing alcohol, both of which lift markings.

Store the grinder with the lid on but not locked down, so the bowl airs out. A closed damp bowl is how a grinder develops a stale smell between uses. Source: appliance manufacturer use and care manuals

Other Machines With the Same Rule

Anything with a motor in the base follows the same logic. How to clean an immersion blender safely covers a version where the motor is in a handle you must never dunk past the seam.

A food processor is the opposite case, since almost everything except the base comes off, and how to clean a food processor bowl and lid walks through the crevices that trap residue.

When the kitchen around the appliances needs more than a wipe, scheduled house cleaning services cover counters, cabinets, and floors on their own schedule.

FAQ

Can you wash a blade coffee grinder in water?

Not the housing. On most blade grinders the bowl is molded into the motor housing, so water runs straight down the shaft and ruins the motor. Wipe the bowl with a barely damp cloth and dry it. Only a genuinely removable grinding cup or the lid may be washed.

How do you get spice smells out of a grinder?

Grind about a quarter cup of plain white rice or a slice of stale bread until it is powder, then dump it out and brush the bowl. The dry abrasive scours the surfaces and absorbs aromatic oils. Repeat for strong spices such as cumin or curry blends.

Can I use rice in a burr grinder too?

No. Rice is fine in a blade grinder but too hard for burrs, where it can chip the cutting edges and strain the motor. Burr grinders take purpose-made grinder cleaning tablets instead. The two machines have opposite rules, so do not carry one habit to the other.

Should I use the same grinder for coffee and spices?

Ideally not. Cumin, curry, and chili oils bind to scratches in the bowl and to the plastic lid, and they can taint coffee for many uses afterward. A second inexpensive blade grinder dedicated to spices solves the problem permanently and costs less than most cleaning products.

Is the lid of a blade grinder dishwasher safe?

Often yes, but check the manual, since some clear lids craze or cloud in dishwasher heat. Hand washing in warm soapy water is always safe. Dry the lid completely before putting it back, because trapped moisture makes the bowl smell stale.

How do I clean the blade without cutting myself?

Unplug the grinder first, then use a dry pastry brush rather than a bare finger to sweep residue off the blade edges. Hold the housing, not the blade. Do not attempt to remove the blade unless the manual explains how, since it is usually pressed onto the motor shaft.

How often should a blade grinder be cleaned?

Brush it out after every use and wipe the bowl weekly with a barely damp cloth. Do a rice or bread grind whenever you switch between coffee and spices, or whenever the last ingredient still smells present. Always leave the bowl to dry fully before storing.
