Why does a mouse start to drag?

The sensor is the other half. An optical sensor reads the surface through a small window, and a film of dust or oil over it causes jitter, skipping, and a cursor that stalls at slow speeds.
Neither problem announces itself. It builds over months, people compensate by moving the mouse harder, and eventually they buy a new one.

How do you clean mouse glide feet?
Turn the mouse over and look at the four white or grey pads. Scrape the built-up ridge off the pad edges with a fingernail or a plastic card, then wipe each pad with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Let them dry for a minute before using the mouse.
Do not use a metal blade or a knife. Gouging a glide foot creates a permanent rough spot that is worse than the grime was.
Isopropyl is safe here because you are cleaning slick polymer pads and bare plastic on the underside, well away from the sensor window and any coated surface.
Feel the difference right away. A cleaned set of feet glides noticeably lighter, and the improvement is usually larger than people expect.
Glide feet are consumable. When they wear thin enough that the plastic base contacts the surface, replacement feet are inexpensive and stick on in a minute.

A clean mouse on a dirty pad is dirty again within a day. Cloth pads shed fiber that transfers straight onto the glide feet, and a pad that has absorbed hand oil is slower than a clean one.

Hard pads and bare desks wipe down in seconds with a barely damp cloth and are worth doing weekly.
If you use the mouse directly on a desk, the finish matters. Glossy and glass surfaces can confuse some optical sensors, and grit on a bare desk wears glide feet fast.

Wireless mice have two extra checks
Battery contacts corrode from humidity and from a leaking battery, and corrosion there causes dropouts that look like a failing mouse. Open the compartment, look, and clean any powdery residue with a dry cloth. A leaking battery is a replace-the-battery situation and the contacts may need careful cleaning.
The receiver dongle also collects lint in its port. Pull it, brush the port with a dry soft brush, and reseat it.
Low batteries cause stutter and lag that feel exactly like a dirty sensor. Rule that out before cleaning.

If the cursor jitters after a full clean, try a different surface before blaming the mouse. Some optical sensors struggle on glass, mirrored, and very glossy surfaces.

If a scroll wheel skips after cleaning, the encoder is worn. Same situation.
