The Two Rules That Prevent Almost All Damage

Electronics fail from cleaning in exactly two ways: liquid gets inside, or a coating gets stripped.

Coating damage is the slow one. What Should You Actually Use on a Screen?

Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth for daily smudges. For anything that does not lift dry, dampen a corner of the cloth with plain water, wipe gently, and follow with a dry section. Manufacturers commonly permit a mild soap solution or a designated screen wipe, but explicitly warn against ammonia, bleach, abrasives and aerosol sprays.

Keycaps on mechanical boards can often be removed and washed; laptop keys usually cannot and should not be pried.

Cleaning and disinfecting are separate steps, and the second one only works on an already-clean surface. For a device that genuinely needs it -- a shared remote, a phone during illness -- most manufacturers now permit a disinfecting wipe used on hard, non-porous exterior surfaces, applied to the cloth or used as a pre-moistened wipe rather than sprayed.

Microfiber works because its fibers are split into extremely fine strands that lift and hold particles rather than pushing them around. Paper towel does the opposite: wood fibers are relatively coarse and can scratch soft coatings.
