Does hot water actually matter?
Yes, but less than people assume, and the dryer is doing more than they realize.
Water at roughly 130 to 140 degrees F kills dust mites in the wash. The problem is that most home water heaters are set near 120 degrees F, because higher settings are a scald risk, particularly with children or older adults in the house. So a "hot" home wash often does not reach mite-killing temperature at all.
Two things save the situation. First, mite allergen is water-soluble, so even a warm or cold wash with detergent removes a large share of it, whether or not the mites themselves are killed. Encasements change the math
A tightly woven zippered encasement over the mattress and pillows is the one product on this page that genuinely reduces the workload.
The encasement puts a barrier between the sleeper and the reservoir inside the mattress, which is the part you cannot wash. Look for a woven fabric rather than a coated or plastic-backed one, since coated versions trap heat and tend to be abandoned within a month.

Things that quietly undo the work
Making the bed immediately. Pulling the covers up traps overnight moisture in the mattress and bedding. Folding the covers back for an hour before making the bed lets it dry, and dry bedding is less hospitable.

Leaving a clean load in the machine. Damp fabric in a warm drum turns musty within hours and has to be rewashed.

Forgetting decorative pillows. They never get washed, they sit on the bed all day, and they collect the same material as everything else.
What washing does and does not do
