HE detergent vs regular detergent explained: what low-sudsing really means, what happens if you use the wrong one, and how much you actually need.

HE detergent is formulated for that small water volume. Its defining feature is suds suppression: it contains agents that keep foam low, plus a concentrated surfactant package designed to work in a shallow pool rather than a full tub. Many also carry more enzymes and chelating agents, because there is less water to dilute soil and minerals.

Regular detergent is built for a full tub. It sudses generously, which historically signaled cleaning power to the user, and the large water volume rinsed the foam away.

Does HE detergent clean better than regular detergent?

Not inherently. In its own machine, each cleans well. The difference is suds control, not cleaning power. Put regular detergent in a high-efficiency washer and the excess foam cushions the tumbling action, traps loosened soil against the fabric, and survives the rinse as residue.

What goes wrong with the wrong detergent

This is the common mistake and the one with consequences.

The suds cushion the load. A front loader cleans by lifting clothes and dropping them through the water. Heavy foam absorbs the impact, so the mechanical action -- a major part of how the wash works -- is reduced.

The rinse cannot keep up. There is not enough water to carry the foam away, so detergent stays in the fabric and on the drum.

Sensors get confused. Many machines detect excess suds and respond by adding rinses and extending the cycle, or by throwing a suds error and pausing.

One accidental load is not damage. A habit of it is.

HE detergent in a regular machine

Harmless. It will clean normally and simply produce less foam than you are used to. If your household has both machine types, buying only HE detergent is the simpler choice.

How to tell what you have

Look for the HE symbol -- a lowercase "he" in a circular swirl -- on the detergent label. Most detergents sold today are HE compatible, and many are labeled "HE compatible" or "for all machines."

For the machine, the rule of thumb is simple. Every front loader is high efficiency. A top loader with a tall center post agitator that fills to cover the clothes is a conventional machine. A top loader with a low disc or plate at the bottom of the tub and a shallow fill is high efficiency.

Dose is more important than which bottle

What if you already used the wrong one

If a load has visible suds still standing at the end of the cycle, run an extra rinse or a short cycle with no detergent. Repeat until the water runs clear. If foam has overflowed the door, unplug the machine and mop before restarting.

If the wrong detergent has been in use for months, expect residue in the machine and in the fabric. Run a hot empty tub clean cycle with an oxygen bleach booster, clean the gasket and dispenser by hand, and wash affected towels and linens in hot water with a booster and no detergent, twice, to strip the buildup.

Which form should you buy?

Liquid, powder and pods all come in HE formulations, and each has trade-offs -- powder is cheapest and least likely to be overdosed but can clump in cold water, liquid dissolves in cold but is easy to over-pour, and pods control dose but cannot be adjusted down for a small load. What happens if I use regular detergent in an HE washer?

It over-sudses. The foam cushions the tumbling action so the load is cleaned less thoroughly, the machine cannot rinse the excess away, and residue is left in the fabric and inside the drum. Some machines detect the suds and add rinses or pause with an error.

Can I use HE detergent in a regular top load washer?
