The two designs move water in completely different ways

Does one design last longer than the other?
Neither design has a decisive lifespan advantage. Most washers of either type run somewhere in the ten to fourteen year range with normal household use. Front loaders have more parts affected by neglect -- the boot, the door hinge and latch, the drain pump filter -- while top loaders more often show agitator, lid switch and transmission wear.
What does shorten life on both is chronic overloading. A drum packed to the top cannot tumble, so the load comes out poorly rinsed and the bearings and suspension take the abuse.
Which one should you buy?
Pick a front loader if you want lower water and energy use, gentler fabric handling, higher spin speeds that shorten dry time, and the option to stack a dryer above it.
